truck worth the work?

I have a guy that will sell me an 89 nissan pickup for $400. It's got 90,000 miles, 4 cylinder 5-speed. The only thing wrong with the truck mechanically is that the fuel pump is dead.

My first problem with this is that I don't have the time nor equipment to drop the tank, replace the pump, and put the tank back in. Would it be possible to just cut a hole in the bed and replace it through the hole?

My second problem is the price of a new pump. Are the fuel pumps in these trucks good enough to just get one out of a junkyard, if possible?

Edit. The guy told me that the truck started up when he put fuel in the carbeurator, but the only 89 nissan pickup info i've been able to find says that they were Fuel Injected, any ideas?

The 89 hard body is throttle body fuel injected. If you don't take the air cleaner off it looks very much like it's carberated. Actually even if you take the cleaner off and you don't know what your looking at it might be mistaken for a carburetor. I had a 86.5 hardbody that had over 500,000 on it when the fuel pump went out on me so as far as other parts. They last a long time if you take car of them(preventive maintenance). The only other thing that ever went wrong with it was the relay to the fuel pump rusted out. That was it except for the usual, tires, brakes etc.. I am presently driving a 92 hardbody with basically the same engine and it has 268,000 on it. I guess you'd have to tell me if it's worth it to you to fix. For $400 I believe it is.

Yeah, I have no idea how much a fuel pump is, maybe phone a mechanic in your area and they can tell you. If the fuel pump is the only thing wrong with the truck then it sounds decent.

Dropping the fuel tank is no big deal. An after-market fuel pump from NAPA supply will run you about $130. From the dealer, about double that, but it also includes the fuel gauge sending unit.
