odometer or mileage readout

My wifes 99 Expy has a problem. I was driving it the other day and noticed that it had no read out for the mileage. Looked a little later and it was back. Also have changed the oil quicker than normal. Could the read out be wrong? Have not watched that close, but could the mileage jump around? What is making the mileage disappear? How do I fix this? Thanks T

I had the same problem with my wifes 99 Ex last year. I got on this forum and found instructions and photos from an electrician guy. It's a bad solder connection on the back of the instrument cluster behind the odometer. You have to take the cluster out and open up the backside and, with a magnifying glass and soldering iron, re-solder the "Cold" connection. Mine, and others, were exactly the same problem as his, right down to the exact same "cold" post. Must have been a bad glitch in the robots at the factory or something. The dealer will charge hundred to diagnose and fix it. I fixed mine in about 1 hour (total time start to finish) and it didn't cost me anything but the one hour of time. It's a tricky job if you don't know how to solder well or aren't patient or don't have a fair amount of technical know-how and a good shop manual. Take a long look through all the postings or do a search for "odometer" and you might find the original post. The bad solder job is the problem, no doubt. Tons of people have had it. Good luck.
