Hi everyone. I have a 1999 cavalier and when I accelerate it makes a whining noise and increases as I increase speed. When I let up on the gas the noise decreases. Any help would be appreciated. Dee Dee

If it is coming from the engine,it could be the belt idler pulley, alternator bearings, water pump, power steering pump,A/C compressor clutch bearings,or a worn belt itself. If its coming from the chassis, could be bad front hub assemblies.
And yes,I noticed the "single woman" tag line, but it didnt implore me to post a reply any faster...even though I am single as well.....lol

Start by checking all your fluid levels. Could be a power steering pump that's low on fluid. Try different things like trying to isolate the problem by listening while air conditioning is on, then off. Does it whine wlile going down the road, while idling, or both? Usually a bad wheel bearing will make a growling noise when the car is moving.

I guess putting that I was single was the wrong thing to do. I just meant I don't have any one to advise me or I wouldn't have ask a question. Anyway it is a high whine coming from the engine not the tires.Does not do it when it idles. Only as I excelerate.

Try taking off your drive belt. See if the problem disappears. You can run without your drive belt for a minute or two, even taking it for a short test drive, without it on. Your water pump won't be running so don't drive far though. Taking off the drive belt will help narrow down the possible causes.
My car too is making a high pitch whiring sound. I'm suspect of the alternator.
