Hello all, I have been reading this forum for a while now and finally decided to post something. Truck wouldn't start tonight just made a clicking noise when i turned it over. Starter sounds like its working. I thought it was the battery cause when i looked at the positive terminal it was leaking so got a new optima and put it in tonight and still nothin. So alternator.... how do i figure out what alternator i have? Its a 99 chevy ls z71 with a 5.3. any help would be great and if you need more info let me know. Thanks Eric

probably just the standard 105 Amp

Look on the casing there are numbers stamped into it. You'll more than likely find the "105" next ot the center line where the two halves meet....

I can't find anything stamped into it. Would it be on the underside (the alternator is still installed in the truck) cause theres nothing on the parts i can see

Real small pings in the shape of the letters, like 8 ping marks to make a straight line. Take a rag with cleaner to the casing, it's near the casing halves on top. Shine a light from the side it will show up better..... Climb in, the engine is calling you... Joke

www.acdelco.com lists that as a 105 AMP. Reman'd ac delco number is 321-1798.

The alternator wont keep ur truck from starting.... unless the battery is dead. But since u dropped a new battery in, thats not ur problem.

Have you tried cleaning the ground and power cables that run from your battery to your starter. I had a problem with corrosion in one of my cables and my truck acted real messed up. It didnt want to stay running then, I just couldnt get it started anymore. Cleaned cables and tightened them good and the truck was good as new.

oh one other thing, i went through 3 batteries trying to figure out what the hell was wrong. Everytime i would almost start the truck it would drain the battery, the truck wouldnt even start off a jump. I dont know if you are having symptoms like this but hey its a place to look.

Thanks to all that helped, got a new alternator today and everything is running great. Turned out the ac delco battery i had was natorious for leaking acid on the positive terminal. So stay away from those batterys. I had to replace the positive cable completely it was so coroded from the crappy battery. New optima battery and new alternator and about $375 down the drain and the truck runs like new again.
