2000 740IL BMW NAV & CD OUT - NEED FIX

I have a 2000 740il in JAN 05 thought I had a starter problem, they replaced the starter and then ignition. Now nav out acting strangley with cd player turning off in the middle of music, radio too, anyone with similar problem and a fix. I hear wire bundle under left side wheel well could be chaffed .

2001 bmw 740il sport..i have the same exact problem...my navi screen would go blank..music would stop working until i would push off and on the power...i thought it was my whole screen unit so i replaced it with the bigger navi unit...but the problem is still there...i think there might be some wires that are loose..anyone know?? also when i start my car sometimes is makes a funny crankin sound like the sound a car makes when your car is started and u try to start it again...weird problems can someone help??

Experiencing exactly the same symtoms. Also, had clicking sound when trying to start, like a dead battery, but would then start right up after a few tries like nothing was wrong. Computer still out though (only getting fuzzy lines on bottom of screen).
Checked for damaged wires behind left front wheel well, but they were fine. Put in battery from my 4runner, and car starts properly now, radio seems to now be working normally (sound only) but still having computer problem. Could low voltage/weak battery have damaged my nav or computer?

Guys you won't believe it! Finally I solved the problem, I recharged the car battery and everything gets back to normal.
So it might be the ALTERNATOR not charging properly.

Even though it's instructions for E32, it also applies to E38. Don't know about E65/6 models, but if anyone has tried this, let me know.

I have replaced the battery with a new one, and still have the same problem, so at least in my case, recharging the battery wouldn't do it.

Also, regarding the last post about "magic reset", how would this differ from just removing the negative lead at the battery? I don't see how the car would know the difference, though I'll give it a try. My battery was already out of the car for a day, so I expect it would have had the same effect. I didn't see anything about the reset taking care of the nav and radio problems addressed in this thread, is that something from your own experience?

It wouldn't differ as a "magic reset" is basically removing the negative lead. It would have the same effect as removing the battery. Basically, the post mentions that what it's doing is making all the computer and memory settings lose their memory and the car essentially has to relearn everything. Like I said above, sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't.

A lot of electrical "gremlins" have been taken care of due to low voltage in cars. For instance, on my 1990 E32 V12, if the battery has 11.6V, I'm dead in the water. Car will not start. 11.7V, there's a good chance I'll get it started. An old battery won't help either, even if you do give it a good charge.

So, is this something from my own experience? Well, yes and no. I didn't "discover" the 'magic reset', but I have used it a few times to diagnose certain problems. For instance, after a reset, my car runs smooth...so smooth in fact, it scares me. After about 300kms, it starts running a little differently...that's when I knew it was the O2 sensors, because the ECU has forgotten the previous readings and has now relearned them after 300km. Changed them out, did another reset, et voila, going on 2500kms and not a peep.

The old adage, "it never hurts to try." That's why I posted it.
