replace 95 5.2L fuel pump

I have a 95 5.2L Dodge Ram with a 318. Been having trouble intermitently with the fuel pump. For awhile I could hit the bottom of the tank with my hand under the pump and it would jar it enough to get me home but no more. Going to attempt changing pump. Plan on removing bed to access pump but already stumpped on relieving pressure on fuel lines. Any advice and tips would be appreciated.Have Hanes repair manual but a little nervous about getting started.

there should be a valve on the fuel rail with a cap on it, looks like the valve stems on your wheels. Put a rag under the valve and depress the center to let out the fuel, that will release the pressure. What do you mean about removing the bed to get access to the pump?? How much gas is in the tank now??

the tank is full. I'm going to remove the truck bed or at least move it back to get access to the pump rather than take the fuel tank down. How much fuel should I expect to come out of the valve before the pressure equalizes and can I do this without the guage they talk about in the manual?

maybe an ounce or two,there is a way to siphon the tank from under the truck. I had a drain line on my truck but it was an 89, I was able to siphon it dry and into gas cans before I started.

just remove the cap and press the center in, its like letting the air out of a tire, maybe put a rag over so it doesn't fly around.

ok,I did it but nothing came out, apparently there wasn't any pressure. Does that mean it may be something else?

I didn't think any would come out, if it ran dry from the pump not working it probably used all the fuel in the system. You could double check to see if there is power going to the pump, sometimes the fuel pump relay is faulty , but since you hit the bottom of the tank and it starts, its probably a bad pump.

I got the new pump in today and it started right up. Thanks for the help 89ltd.
