Clutch Slave or Master Cylinder

Anyone know which one normally dies first? I would assume that the symptoms of failure are the same so I don't know.

My car gets garaged unless it's a pretty day out, meaning I only drive it 1 or 2 times a week. The past couple of times I have started the car I have to push the pedal almost all the way in before the clutch will release. It is mushy most of the way.

If I pump it up a couple of times everything is fine. This only happens when the car is cold. Also, after pumping it up initially, everything is fine for the rest of the day, even after letting it sit for a couple of hours.

My guess is it's either the slave or master causing the pressure to be released and when it warms up the pinhole somehow gets sealed.

The slave is $51 from the dealer and the master is $98, so I really don't want to replace both.

Also, how hard is it to replace? Where are they at? Is there a writeup for the replacement?

Thanks!!

It's hard telling without actually being able to look at the car. Are you sure the bleeder just isn't loose on the Slave?

The slave cylinder is on side of the transmission/or front however you look at it, on the radiator side. It's not hard to miss, i would check it for leaks and see if the bleeder isn't tightened all the way down before you replace anything.

this is all it shows on alldata, sorry man, hope it helps, maybe you could by rebuild kits... the slave cylinder should be right outside your tranny or at least thats how it is on my 1g, and the master cylinder is usualy located on the firewall above the pedal...

I checked under the dash and didn't see anything leaking, that's what was pointing me in the direction of the slave cylinder. I'll check the bleeder next time I have the car out, but I'm heading out to Pittsburg on bussiness later today and probably won't get a chance to look until next week.

I think I'll just buy a new slave (if that's what it is) instead of the rebuild kit. The new slave is only $51 from Satan, so that's not too bad.

Too bad my buddy with the lift is in the process of moving to a new location. I might have to lay on the garage floor for this one. :disappoin

I found this, it's for a 1g and was wondering if it's the same for the 2g's?

I'll have to check SomeData :grinno: when I get back and see if maybe they have a walkthrough on how to replace the slave. Sometimes I love that program, but most of the time it just frusterates me!

Thanks EDMUND65 for taking the extra time to post up that diagram, I appreciate it. :smokin:

By the way Josh, where do you work? You are on here as much as I am. :cwm27:

I work as the warranty administrator for a buick, pontiac, gmc dealer in service. It's been pretty dead lately and since i have my own office with the internet i'm on quite a bit.

i got a new slave at Advanced Auto, and it was only $20 and it has worked fine for almost a year now, but it did get kinda rusty, unlike the one that was on it before.
pull back the boot on the slave and see if there is any clutch fluid in there, if there is its shot. as for the 1g installation, it looks pretty similar to the 2g.

We've been dead here too, lately. Well at least I have.

I have my own "secluded" room within the lab where no one bothers me. It's nice, isn't it! :icon16:

I was thinking about getting that one.....but I think I am going to get one straight from the dealer. A friend of mine thought that the dealer would probably carry a higher quality part and it would be worth the $30 extra.

So I can almost follow the VFAQ for the 1g? Also, did you lube up everything like shown in the picture that EDMUND65 posted, or did you just install the new one? Also, how long did it take you to make the swap?

Thanks!!!

It really wont take you long to do once you get in there and see how everything's put together. Probably a half hour, and dont forget to bleed the cylinder when you install it to get the air out.

i wouldn't go to say that the dealer has higher quality parts. if it was me, i would go for the aftermarket one and save the extra money. i've replaced many master/slave clutch cylinders and have had no problems with aftermarket ones.

are you losing any fluid from the resirvoir or have you added/changed the fluid lately? have you tried bleeding the system yet?

yeah... it doesnt take long to do at all. Like I said my aftermarket one is just fine, if I were you I would save the 30 dollars for something else. They both do the same thing.
