160 T-Stat install

I know some of you have gone with the 160 degree T-stat. I just got a hypertech 160 powerstat. I was wondering if there is anything i should watch out for when installing it. and how well does it really work. should i notice a big difference. I live in Hawaii and my truck is a daily driver in stop and go traffic. any tips are helpful. thanks everyone.

well thanks for the heads up blender. i think im going to change it tomorrow, I have to help my friend move out of his house so the truck is going to get used alot tomorrow. We'll see how cool she stays.

Yeah, and DEX-COOL is not cheap... undiluted it's like $11 or $12 a gallon

Well i put the T-stat in, it was really easy, now the truck runs nice and cool. Just today the truck was on average 20 degrees cooler.

Do you still have the mechanical fan? If so it will still start to pull air, not free float, when the clutch senses 175+(? +/-)... So you may not get the radiator to the temp of your T-stat since the fan is set at a different temp. I don't know if they make a Mech clutch for with a different temp.

Now you know why I like the Elect fans so much better than the mech clutch... One user adjustable setting, not parts, for desired temp after you change the T-stat..... :naughty:

Ive got a lot of shopping around to do, as much as i would love to put the electric fans in right away, im only alloted some much money each paycheck. I have new responsibilites at hand (baby on the way). So now with my truck i have to take baby steps to reach the ulitmate goal. If you know anyone that is getting rid of a set up for a good price let me know. Junk yards are hard to come by here, and a real pain in the ass to find (hidden). If i were back in Ohio i would have no problems getting fans. Oh well what can a guy do. Well any more good info let me know. Thanks.

Did not mean to rain on your parade as much as let you know that you can not realisticly hit that 160* on a real hot day due to that clutch, the forgotten part.....

Me too! We found out last weekend that my wife is pregnant. Fortunately, other than e-fans and a cam swap (I don't think I'll eve shell out the money for a turbo or engine swap unless I start making the big bucks) I think I got most of the bolt on's covered. Jethro had (has?) a LS1 fan setup he's trying to get rid of for a good price. It's funny; I was browsing Flex-a-lite's fan setup for the 99-02 with the 28(?)" radiator... looks almost exactly like LS1 fans.

Well hopefully it wont take me to long to come up with the money, Ive got a bonus coming in the next week i think, pay some bills, hide some of it for the baby and see what i got left. But like i said if you see or hear of someone trying to unload a good working set please let me know. Thanks. Oh and congrats blender, Is this going to be your first kid. Beware.
If you are using the truck for regular street driving a 160 thermostat will cause a lot of problems.
True it will make truck run cooler and you even may see a little more HP.
But if the engine does not warm up and run at the reg tempture the oil may start sludging up. You need the warm engine to burn the condensation out of engine and engine oil.
Also the computer system is set up for the engine to run at 195 degree.
If it does not see the engine running at normal tempt it may start setting codes and overload the cats and 02 sensors and it will never get to the 14.7 to 1 air fuel mix for the best performance and gas mileage.

With the 160º t-stat, the engine does run right at 195º. The mod is fine, I even checked it thru legendary tuner Allen Nelson, himself. He said all of his vehicles run a... well, here, you see for yourself:
An engine running about 180 deg is just fine. I install the 160stat in all my vehicles, especially here in south tx.

Thank you blender, i was going to say the truck doesnt run at 160, if someone understands how thermostats work they would realize that, the thermostat will actully run at 185 degrees and closes at 160, as for me i know my truck runs at about 185 to 190. im sure it will be just fine. Just like Mr. Nelson says.

:iamwithst Guess I'll keep mine in until I get the electric fan setup.

I just got back from getting my A** WIPED by his GOAT and we talked about the T-stat. In my '05 VHO he recommends like other trucks get the thermostat lower and then the fan turn on point can be brought down to keep a constant 185*-190*.

I will be installing the 160 t-stat before the tune on Friday so he can set the elect fans to go full before 230*. Now I think that is way warm enough....
