thinking about ditching the pipes

Im really starting to get annoyed with the clunking my exhaust pipes make when I hit bumps. Im also liking the look of no big tips sticking out from under the body. I was thinking about taking them off and putting a pair of dumps on my muffler. I looked around and found that the Flowmaster Scavenger Turndowns look like exactly what I was looking for. Ive seen them for around $30 but was wondering if anyone else has seen them cheaper. Also should I expect s better sound (louder) from doing this? I know on cars its a bit louder because the exhause bounces off the ground but my truck is a little higher.

I say go for it. I've personally never been a fan of exhaust pipes on trucks. I've always thought it looked better not seeing anything. If the dumps are too loud, you could always route the system to the back and have them hidden right above the bumper.

Well that depends on how loud you want it. I ran my truck with no muffler for a little bit and damn it was loud. If you go that route use a 2 3/4" to 3" pipe straight back with a set of turndowns if thats what you are looking for. I guess i didnt really notice the extra loudness of the truck with no mufflers until I accelerated past my friend in his Durango. He called me and said DAMN that was Loud!! So thats always an option for ya. And your cats should offer enough back pressure for the motor.

As far as big chrome exhaust tips hanging out the back of the truck, I'm not a fan of them either. Especially if they're too loud. Call me Gramp if you want to. Yours seem a little more tastefully done than most though. I thought they look good.

Personally, I really like the sound of a 6.0 through the stock exhaust. I'm not messin' with mine.

Yea, I actually have cut the pipes a bit since I took the pic's I have in my gallery. I tucked the tips up about 3" since then. I still love how the split duals look, i just dont like all the noise the pipes are under their. Im just lookin to try something different. But im definetly keeping the pipes incase I change my mind. My real question was if anyone knew where I could get a pair of these Flowmaster Turndowns for really cheap. I checked e-bay and the prices were the same as a few other online stores.

Those are pretty short. With the Flows it will probably be louder, but not that much b/c Flows already resonate in the cab an awful lot. My turndowns are around 7" in lenght, you can get them at pretty much any muffler shop. If you want something that isn't that loud in the cab I suggest a new muffler...that's the only way.

Well I have a Gibson muffler, which isnt that loud. The only reason I was looking at the Flowmaster dumps is because they seemed to be the cheapest. Im trying to avoid any pipes at all. I just want something small like that and have them right out of the muffler.

I've actually got some turn down tips on my pipes... I'll get some pics later

Back in the early 60's, it was really popular for the pipes to come up just behind the cab (just inside the bed on fleetside and just outside on sportside). They'd come straight up and just clear of the cab with a little bend towards the back like the semi's did back then. My sister's boyfriend had a truck like that. I haven't seen it in a long time!!! So, I like the tips coming out from just under the bumper. I might have mine cut back though so they're a bit more discrete.

im gettin sick of my pipes too...how do turn downs work? just underneath so you dont see any exhaust?

Why not have the exhaust routed up to either side of the cab, like an 18 wheeler? :dunno: That would look cool :) with the little flaps that open and close when you give it gas :)

Their is actually a kit for Desil trucks to do that. I believe they come out of the front of the bed though. I actually saw a pair on a Dodge the other week. Pretty kool.

Dodge did it in '79 with their classic Lil Red Express. They were kinda cool but definitely had a late '70's look, kinda gaudy.
