Overheating

Hello All,

I posted a thread about a month ago about my camaro being stored for 4 years, for those that replied thanks for your input the car fired right up and had no leaks.

Now to the problem I have now. The car has been overheating because the fan would not kick on so I fixed that by running it straight to a switch that turns on when the engine is on and that stopped it from overheating. But then I had the AC serviced and now the car heats up when the AC is on it does not boil over but it gets to about 240, so does anyone have any ideas of how to fix this.

is it a dual fan setup?

either way, since it's been sitting so long, i'd flush the cooling system, replace the thermostat. check and see if the fan being wired to run when the car is on has burned the fan motor out. Most likely the coolant temp sensor that tells the ecm to turn the fan on has gone bad and needs replaced, it's on the right side, you get to it from underneath, i'm not sure if it's in the head or the block, i'm thinking head tho.

If you have an LS-1 fan setup (which I assume you do) this is normal with the A/C on in a hot climate. If you need extra cooling, you can get yourself a hypertech programmer and make your engine fans come on at a lower temperature (like 160-180 instead of 210), or you can get a pusher fan to put infront of the radiator. Other options that work well too are a bigger radiator, adding water wetter, or running a little more water than anti-freeze than the current mix.

he has a 92. although those are some good suggestions also once you get the whole cooling system operating properly

Im saying definetly the thermostat, but I would flush the cooling system as well like Geno suggested.

as long as its not in the red u should just flush your system. im having major problems over heating right now, just slaped on a new water pump and its still 250 so i have to check hoses for a leak..u might wanna check your entire system as well...u dont wanna go through what i am right now, this sux ass big time

Ok everyone I have a 92 and the thermostat has been replaced and I had a shop to check the system and they said to run the fan straight or replace the temp send unit. I have ran the fan straight and it has not burned the motor on the fan out.

I think I will try a dual fan, flushing the system might help I will try it. Thanks for everyones input.

Are there different sensors that tell the ecm what the temp is and what is reported on the dash guage?

Maybe there's a leak in your radiator, like what happend to me. To make sure you just turn on your camaro, drive around for a while till it heats up and then park it and open the hood to see if there is water shooting out.

Do you live in a hot climate? That can have a big influence on engine temp. I live in Las Vegas so of course my motor always runs hotter than most.

Yeah thats true.. my Monte sometimes runs a little bit over the middle mark because its hot as hell in Texas.. especially after I get out of school

Pretty normal for this car. Just change the coolant and do like (25/75 mix). (flash first).

has your switch burnt yet or not ? (You should use a relay for that) What kind of switch you talkink about. Is it on all the time?
