prep for dropping engine in 89 DL wagon

I am about to drop a 1.8 engine into a 89 DL Wagon. The engine came out of a 89 Loyale. Before I put the engine in, should I do anything to the engine while it's out and everything is easy to get to. How about anything in the engine compartment or the transmission? Are there any parts I should consider changing or any adjustments I need to make? If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Is the transmission in the 89 Loyale 4WD interchangable with the transmission in the 89 DL Wagon 2WD? Both transmissions are automatics.

Can anyone tell me where the ECM is located? Some guys call it the computer or the brain for the electrical system. Thanks, PW

When you say transmission, I am assuming you deliberately mean the gearbox and differentials.
The gearbox should unbolt from one engine and onto the other if they are the same bolt pattern without a problem.

I'd suggest changing the "rubber bands." Check the tensioners, idler gears and water pump, R&R the spark plugs and at the least flush the radiator. I'd probably can the timing covers if your going to be the only one fooling with it. They really do little other than keep idiots hands out of the working parts.

As far as 2WD swapping with a 4WD I doubt it. Wiring is different as the 4WD in part works off of electronics and is intergratred into the control unit. And you have a drive shaft coming out the back of the 4WD if I recall correctly from the one I did own. Won't EVER have another NOR a turbo.

Personally after my '90 2WD Loyale gives up the ghost, (hopefully a long time from now.) I doubt I'll ever own another "Subbie." Its a shame too because its the easiest car to work on I've ever laid a wrench to. I have no need for a 4WD or All Wheel Drive. Its just more moving parts to break. All Subarus are now 4WD. Don't need the grief.

The ecm is above the steering colum.I seem to recall taking off a panel and it right at front.black box about 10 inches square and 2inches thick. red light on front is where you can read codes.
2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive will not interchange on stick shift without changing clutch and flywheel. Don't know about auto. Check bolt patteren and flexplate.
If you have a/c getting to engine mounting bolts can be fun.
