lifters questions

My bro asked me to ask you guys about this.... he has a 93 4.0 cherokee. He has ordered a (mid-level)cam from moparperf. and it's coming with lifters, but that's the only place that gives any lifters with their cam or whatever. He is putting in new valve springs, but it's gonna take so much more work puttin in the lifters. The engine has 150k miles on it but runs strong. Is it necessary putting them in? None of the sites say anything about having to put in lifters. After talking with him he got afraid that mixing a new cam with old parts would cause a problem. I know very little about this. I've been told that if the lifters are rollers then there is probably no real point in changing them. If they weren't roller type would there be consequences(sp) if they weren't changed out?

I would agree with your brother, i think if your in there, replace them both, at the mi. that you have on there, i would do it. with a preformance cam, it caould put more stress on the lifters, and create stress fractures and could leak, thats just me. I hope this helps.

Read carefully:
Every new cam MUST have new lifters, regardless of whether its a stock cam or a performance cam.

Conventional lifters rotate slowly when in use. The lifter and the cam lobe it rides on creates a unique wear pattern. If a used lifter is placed on any other lobe other than the one it is wear-matched to, that lifter often will not rotate properly, and will wear that cam lobe flat quickly thus ruining the cam.

It is possible to put new lifters on a used can, but never, never use used lifters on a new cam.

Notice I say 'conventional lifters'. Roller lifters (the kind with the little wheel at the base) do not have this limitation.

Thanks guys. That helps greatly. So the stock lifters are the non-roller (conventional) style? ..just making sure before we tear it down.

always put new lifters in with a new cam because the old lifters have worn to to ur old cam! if you didn't replace them, the cam would wear out very quickly! roller lifters are better than the other, simply because there is less friction, thus giveing more hp.
