Domestic?

Oh my.. Yeah I realise the Eclipse shares some domestic parts, but how domestic is it? I was surfing the net, and came across some article saying that it was about 75% domestic. That can't be true, can it? If anybody knows, how domestic is the Eclipse?

Considering it's made in Normal Illinois...about 1 hour from where i live, i would say it's possible.
Also look at other manufacturers as well, many GM parts come from Canada, Brazil, and Mexico.

I read somewhere inside in my eclipse that it has 22% japaneese parts inside. It was somehwre inside under the handrest, between the seats. the number was around 22 not sure but definitly in the 20% area.

Its made in America and the Non-Turbo even had a dodge engine, it wasn't even sold in Japan. In my opinion, its an American car which was sometimes sold with an "import" badge.

:uhoh: I don't even see my Eclipse the same way now.. It's still a great car, but damn. It's like when your woman tells you she got pregnant by your best friend on your wedding day :banghead:

Yeah but either way isn't Mitsubishi a Japanese company or is it American too?

I believe Mitsubishi is a Japanese company, just with a bunch of American ties. I guess they were too busy designing the evo and such back then, that they didn't have time for the Eclipse and just let Dodge handle it. Japanerican. Bah, I don't like it.

I'm curious to know who designed the body. I always thought that it was built on a Mitsubishi frame (or unibody) but I wonder who is responsible for the actual aesthetics of the cars.

I heard that the body design, and basically the whole layout was from Mitshu... then parts were added in from all over.

It's odd that it would be Japanese designed, but never released in Japan. Also, I would assume the 75% domestic parts refers to the NT cars if the body, motor, and drivetrain are all Japanese on the turbos. I guess if you count them being actually built in the US as being domestic parts.

Mitsubishi is a very large Japanesse company that produces many other things besides cars, from the A/C units we had in Afghanistan, to heavy machinery. I believe that Mitsu automotive is owned/or a subsidirary of General motors. Which is why they have many GM parts. Originally it was a japanese company, but now it is little more than american company with a japanese names.
Just like Ford and Mazda or Nissan
You have to understand that for instance, Ford is the largest car manufacturer in the world. They own many smaller companies, japanese included. GM owns it's fair share and then there is just Honda which is Just Honda.

Actually it was Daimler Chrysler that owned Mitsu, not sure if they still do.
Also i believe it was the FTO that was the Eclipse for the Japanese market, except they used the Mivec V6.
Edit: GM owns the shitty little Daewoo's

Chrysler pulled their money out of Mitsubishi sometime last year. Ford has some relationship with Nissan but I'm not sure what it is in terms of ownership. They sell the same minivan under different badging. If you look at some of the parts they will have both Nissan and Ford part numbers.

Ford and Nissan no longer have a Minivan badge engineering relationship as the Villager was replaced by the Monterrey (a rebadged Freestar)
You may be partially confused because ford and MAZDA have been badge engineering a lot of cars lately. For example the new Ford Fusion is built on the Mazda 6 chassis.

I think Diamler/Chrysler own about 30% of only Mitsubishi Motors North America. I don't think they have a hand in Mitsubishi in Japan or other overseas countries. Maybe I'm wrong...?
