OK... I have a 1.8 l 5 speed Golf K2. Whenever ity rains alot or there is high humidity it has a very hard time starting..Spits and sputters, grey smoke...etc.. Is it a cracked cap ? something else? It finally ended up costing me a starter motor...yesterday. So any info on the problem..and oh yes...how to change the starter out would be appreciated.

Well seems no one on this forum is interested in giving answers. The only new info I see is more people posting questions. Guess I'll keep on looking .

I would do a ignition system tune up if it is due. There are many things that could be causing the hard starting. The computer may have some codes in it indicating what is out of tolerance, and that would put you in the right system to trouble shoot.

Changing the starter should be quite straight forward, even though i have'nt changed one on your model. Disconnect the battery, remove the cables to your starter, making a note of where they go(it should'nt be hard, as they will usually only fit the correct terminals) Undo the starter mounting bolts and it should come off ( may require a bit of assistance with hammer) fit your new starter make sure it fits snugly before tightening the mounting bolts, refit your cables and connect your battery then turn the key with fingers crossed. let me know how you get on. If you have'nt got a Haynes manual then i would get one as they make life so much easier
