Is this an even deal? What would you do?

Hi guys, I'm new around here and am looking for some advice. I have the oppritunity to trade my 1998 chevy Tahoe with 101k miles on it for a 1995 eclipse gs-t with 94,000 miles on it. I test drove the GS-T and man is it fast. I do like it, but would it be wise for me to trade it even Trade for my Tahoe? I just put about 1k into repair work into my truck so I know it's going to last me for a while. How well do eclipses hold up? What are the trouble spots? How are the turbos in them? My buddy says that the eclipse has a problem with thier engines on the turbo models. I checked J.D power and associattes and saw that it's marks weren't the best, but I compared it with my Tahoe and they were even as far as mechanical reliability goes and about even all around. I don't want to get a problematic car. I am going to have him put a 2 year dealer warranty on it that covers engine and transmission, is there anything else that usually goes wrong with these things? Is this enough of a warranty? Anything I should know in general? The dealer has the list price of that car at almost 7K$, and on autotrader I see a lot of Tahoes going for about 8K$ with the same year and miles, so I know I could sell it for more, but I kind of want it now. Should I just hold up and sell it and buy a newer one, different car, or will this one be ok? :screwy:

It's really determined by what you want. If the car was beat on constantly by some 16yr old kid, than you will run into more problems than someone who takes care of their car.

I bought mine from Miss Pennsylvania 1999 four years ago. I have had no mechanical issues to date, other than routine maintenance. She had all the service records and really took care of the car.

Check the records if they are available and see if you can find out when the timing belt was replaced.

Is the timing belt expensive to replace? I think that was one of the problems my buddy told me about, that and a little pulley or something that is easy to break. The cars inside and out looks pretty decent, normal anyway, no worse than mine really. The black trim on the outside of the door has started turning white, but I think that is normal with these kinds of cars. I looked at a Talon once that had the same thing going on. Is there some kind of paint you can use to make it look better without having to be a pro?

Once again, it depends on the car and the way it was cared for. Leaving the car stock I have heard nothing but good things about them. Now if you go slapping an FP Green on there with all the supporting mods and running 30psi you should expect problems.

If you pay to have the timing belt done, along with the balancer belt, tensioner, water pump, etc....you are looking around $800, if I remember correctly. You will want to have this done if it is close to needing it. The timing belt is not something to screw around with on these cars, if it breaks you are screwed.

If I do decide to get this car, I'm going to have a dealer warranty. The dealer said the warranty would cover engine and Tranny, would the timing belt be covered by the warranty. Forgive my ignorance.

They will not perform the scheduled maintenace, and if you neglect it and something breaks because you didn't do the maintenace when you were supposed to, the chances of them paying to fix it will be minimal.

If you are looking for reliability only, I would suggest you go get a Honduh. :grinno:

As far as the warranty goes, normally they are pretty standard. Powertrain only, and don't cover wear items like clutch, flywheel, etc.

You could always scan it and post up a picture.

Do or Die Devil Dog. When I first won I wanted to buy a whole bunch of cars and a big house and all that happy horseshit. Then I realized if I do that I'll be broke in ten years. So instead I made Business investments and live in an apartment. So I still get to drive fast cars when they come into the dealership but I sell them off after a week or two. There are lots of downsides of winning the lotto too. Like Blood family trying to get their hands all over your money. :banghead:

Sorry for highjacking the hell out of your thread Glockman. How much gas does that monster tahoe use? Do what I did get the DSM, and a Toyota Crappola (37 MPG) for dependability. It's ugly as sin 92 model with crashed fender, that cost me $400 and gets me to work EVERY single day.
