forced induction on a 99 civic ex

Ive had my 99 civic ex for about a year now and i love it. The engine mods ive done so far are aem cai, crane cams 11m wires, jg edelbrock header, random tech 3" cat, and a tanabe racing medalion catback system. The car really sounds and runs great right now but im really looking into adding some serious power. I was looking into either a JRSC or a Drag Gen 3 turbo Kit. I know for all around drivability the JRSC is probably my best bet but the idea of having an HKS external blowoff valve from that turbo kit makes me tremble lol. I know if i get the turbo kit im going to have to try to sell that header out right to someone but if it adds some considerable hp over the JRSC it definitally worth it. If anyone has any time slip in the 1/4 mile with either the JRSC or any type of turbo kit on a honda/acura please post it. If you have any comments or opinions on either of my two options any response will be of help to me.

The JRSC would be fun for daily driving because of the low end torque gains. Turbo's are always fun to have and the power you would make would put a smile on your face. It's just your preference on what you want out of your car. A blow off valve is always a plus. Also, it is easier to up the boost on a turbo than a JRSC. You can sell that header and AEM CAI you have now and use the money towards the turbo. Both kits have their pluses and minuses.

like FBP said, if you want power from the touch of the gas then get a sc. u can check out performance gains at www.jacksonracing.com cuz they got a dyno graph for a 99 ex. dont know too much about turbos except for turbo lag. i got a 00 civic ex and im gonna get a jrsc cuz i prefer constant power and it is my daily driver.

I have a drag 3 turbo kit and i love it. I have two friends with JRSC's on their cars (95 si, and 95 ex) and i'm sorry to say it but i blow their doors off. Turbo lag is practically non-existent, and it feels great when your head gets thrown back into the seat. The guys with the JRSC are running 15 sec quarters and 10 sec 1/8's. I have low 14 sec quarters and 9.0 in eighth.

Whats thier web page, ive got the 95 si motor in my 91 civic hatch and thinking about a turbo for the spring. I've looked at the Greddy and thinkin about it, but would like to look around a lil first.

thanx gunnmen01

First of all JDOGG, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. I've boosted my 99 Civic EX with 9psi and the only reason I haven't spanked it into the 13's is because I've got the stock suspension and drivetrain on it and I can't get a decent launch without making the front wheels jerking across the ground. Also, it doesn't help that I suck at reaction times (usually 1.2-1.5sec). I love smoking little ricers and domestic V8's on the road. It makes me feel good knowing that I put less money into my ride to make it fast that some ricer car has in looks (and tries to be fast) and total cost is WAY less than a domestic with a V8. I still get the gas mileage, too. So before you go blabbing your mouth, why don't you do some homework yourself instead of listening to word of mouth. I'll tell you the diff between Greddy and the other kits:

1. You can have the 15G kit and everything else I have on my ride (except the wheels) for under $2,500, when other kits cost you around $1,000 more. You're right, it's a bargain.

2. The 15G sacrifices size (more PSI at higher revs) for faster spooling. The 15G puts out nicely for a daily driver, but you don't sacrifice streetability. The other kits can put out MUCH MORE power than the Greddy and come with injectors and so on, but do you really think you're engine can take the amount of air pressure those kits can put out without droppring a couple grand into the lower end? I doubt it.

3. The only problem I've EVER heard that is a REAL problem with the Greddy kit's are the cast iron manifolds for the Miata kits were cracking a while back. I don't know if this has been resolved or not, but it happened.

KUNGFOOJAP: I hope this has given you a little insight on the differences in turbo kits. Apexi, F-Max, Drag, AND Greddy all put out awesome products. All you need to do is research them, find out what you want now and what you might want in the future, cause if you're going to build up the block and make a monster, trust me when I tell you that the Greddy kit isn't for you. Go with one of the other 3 I mentioned before. And please, please, get an intercooler.

Happy boosting!

excellent points.

I'd go turbo. JRSC can only run like 6 psi unless you upgrade pulleys. not to mention they run all!!! the time, sucking gas and life out of your engine. With a turbo you have the option to use it or not, saving the life of the turbo and the engine. Its like power on reserve. The potential of a turbo is way higher than the JRSC too. Plus with a small turbo there will be hardly any lag. If you are running a civic I would go with that big of a turbo anyway because you don't have the exhaust to fuel it. I would go with the apex or drag 3 kit, more likely the drag 3 though.

Honestly piecing your kit together is a lot cheaper, like 2 grand cheaper. The most difficult part is the manifold, Idealy you want a tuned manifold but I don't think many kits have those.

Good Luck
