replaced timing belt and waterpump. bad sound now..

Well I just got done with my two day project of timing belt and water pump chnge... If It wasnt for the kids wanting to constantly help out by taking my tools I would have had it done yesterday...

Well I fired it up and it sounded like ASS! At first it was because I had crossed plug wires 3 and 5. fixxed that and it was still there. sounds like something hitting, banging, thumping near the water pump. I really dont thing my Timing belt is off any teeth. I marked the old one before I removed it, transfrerred teh marks to the new one and counted teeth to ensure they all matched up. I cant imagine timing being off causing the noise I am hearing,, as it is ONLY on the drivers side, ie where I was working.... I work teh next three nights so I wont be able to work on it untill friday, so what should I lookk for?

Things I am thinking... Water pump is empty maybe? I filled the cooling system fro the fill cap by the thermostat, but shoud I have pulled out the thermostat so that I filled it from the top of the block? I diddnt want to let it run long enough to get hot for the T-Stat to open, the thumping noise scared me.. as I dumped coolant in it filled the rad and then how much could have traveled UP the lower hose to fill the water pump from the pipe going across the top of the block.

Any ideas? Or is any one in the DC area (I live in Winchester but car is south at my inlaws, 66 west to the 81 south) free on Friday? help me fix it Ill buy the pizza.

oh yea, it s a SOHC, not dohc unfortunately.

could be. Im going to pul all the covers off and start it again to see fif that is it. if so will it hurt anything to run it? Thinking back on the re-assembly, the timing belt tensioner was giving me fits and I dont think I tourqed down its bolt. that also might be a part of the problem. I wont have a cnhance untill friday or maybe thursday night to look at it. keep thei ideas coming please.

well its fixxed. the darn timing belt tensioner was loose. bolt had backed about 1/8th inch off the pulley!! tourqued her to 7lbs and it sounds and runs great. but now my radiator drain plug is leaking.... it never ends......

Congrats on finding the problem. I have a question though....I've always read things that talk about how much torque should go into a nut or bolt or whatever and was wondering how one actually measures that? I usually just tighten something and hope it's enough and not too tight but never know how to actually measure how tight something is. ;o/

torque wrench

I have mirometer adjusting Tourque wrench. has two dials onthe end of the handle, which I set to the reguired setting, ie 7 ft lbs, and start smoothly puling untill my wrechc clicks.
