We have a 1999 Mercury Tracer (the Escort's twin) that we bought new. It's been the same since day one and I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but the car is generally a loud car. Driving down the highway at 70 mph, the engine noise is really quite annoying. Has anyone else experienced this with these cars and if so have you found anyway of maybe better insulating the car to quiet it down a bit. Thanks.

I used to items that helped much 1) is lucas fuel treatment cleans the upper chambers. 2) castrol gtx high mileage oil.

I installed a high powered stereo. I don't notice much road/engine noise anymore.

Had the same problem with a 97 2.0 SPI. I put some fiberglass insulation glued under the hood and it quieted it down a lot. Used 3-M spray adhesive. The noise could be road noise transmitted through the tires. When I got new tires the noise level went down considerably. The stock tires on the car were making quite a bit of road noise. Make sure you don't have any more pressure than 32 in the tires. Insulation under the carpet in the front would be affective, but don't know if you want to invest that much time and effort.

Thank you all for your advice. I'm going to try the insulation although the louder stereo would probably be easier. :p

another thing when i fight got my car (used) I had the gear oil changed that made things a little bit quieter also. Would love to find out if lucas makes a gear oil.

I too am one that went the rute of putting in a bigger stereo. (2000 watt nine speaker) A really good sound material is dynamat. It will also help your bass if you decide to put a stereo in too.
