Confused...temp sender in rad + another in lower rad hose?

Hi,
I pulled the air cleaner assembly out of my '89 Cherokee 4.0L , and was shocked to find a temperature sender spliced into the lower radiator hose IN ADDITION to the sender in the usual place on the radiator only a couple of inches away. This is NOT normal, is it?
Don't know quite what to make of it, but I think I might be a lucky guy, because I'm looking for a place to put the sender for my AutoMeter water temp guage. (I realize that most water temp guages are tapped into the block, but I'm not one to overlook a target of opportunity.)
I guess I need to see which one of the senders is actually hooked up, and use the hole the other one comes out of....
Opinions?
