Turbo Civic vs Motor Swap Civic

I was looking at the modified civics in autotrader today and got to thinking, what would be faster (in the 1/4 mile or auto-x), a civic with a motor swap or a turbo civic?

I have a friend who swears that his 96 (i think) turbo stock motor civ would kill any h22 b16 and b18 civic on the street but ive personaly had and have seen some close races between another friends h22 civ and some pretty pewerful cars so i dont know.

The main reason i ask is because i plan on buying one here in a few months, and i want to buy one that has already been pre-modded.

The ones im looking at are
96 sedan with a t3/t4 (from a guy i know)
95 hatch with a GSR motor
95 h22a1 vtec hatch
93 b18c hatch,
92 hatchback b16a2 civic
92 crx b20 ls vtec
92 hatch si turbo(i dont know what kind of turbo)
91 hatch with a h22
and a 89 crx with a ZC motor

So assuming the motor swap civics had not much more than e/h/i done to them and the turbo civics were running on stock internals, and none of them were gutted what ones do you think would be faster, more reliable, more fun, and better mpg and also what has more potential for if i do modify it more myself?

No matter what if you have f/i your reliability goes down the drain...and if you do want a car thats already been modded keep in mind that they have probably been driven pretty hard...now about the thing with stock turbo civic...that stock motor that comes in the civics are all sohc(besides 99-00 Si) so I would recommend a motor swap over a turbo D series...remember you can always turbo a B series which will result in more power than the D series...with your friend and his turbo sohc hes pretty stupid to think that he can kill any H22 or GSR swapped civic on the street...a turbo GSR hatch would rape the shit out of his little sohc...

Im saying even if you build a turbo car with rebuilt internals and everything its still not going to be as reliable as it once was...about the other part his friend has the STOCK '96 civic motor which means thats the sohc motor...he turbocharged that and claims he can beat any h22 b16 or GSR swapped civic...

A turbocharged vehicle if put together right can be just as reliable as stock. It will require more up keep, but can be just as reliable as a stock car. And he probably can beat most swapped h22's and gsr's. A
conservative turbo set-up on a sohc would put down around 250whp. That is more than enough to beat any h22 or gsr from Honda.

Yes but none of the swaps he mentioned are turbo. The point of the thread is to help him decide if he should buy a turbo sohc or a civic w/ a n/a swap.

Build up the d16z6 and turbo the hell out of it. That is the cheapest route to get a lot of power. Blocks, heads, and transmissions are a dime a dozen, parts are cheap and plentiful (if you figure out where they're hiding on the net).

No offense, but stock NA hondas aren't that that fast until they are turboed. Turbos own all motor when it comes to honda.

i have a civic eg dx (d15b7)no vtec i jsut put a t25 turbo on (extremely small)w/hx mani,dsm bov,dsm side mount,and i tuned it with crome, and it made 175whp on wastegate(7.5psi??) and 227whp@14psi the motor is bone stock, even stock injectors! keep in mind that this car comes with 103bhp.
Im into the whole turbo kit $350! im into the hole car $2550! I'm running it at the track this friday.

thanks, i dont think i would have seen any 13's last night if my friend didnt let me use his baby slicks. I cant wait for my friend to come back home from a trip he went on, he has a crx b16a w/75shot naawwws, and his best time was, 13.9@?? but that was on street tires) but he he's been gone for about 2weeks, and when he left i had just bought the car, and it was bone stock. I cant wait to race him, He'll be so pissed if i beat him.. considering he just dished out $2500 for jdm b16, and i got my car and turbo for same price.

i jsut bought a ex/si tranny($150) off a body of mine today, and also bought used si intake manifold for $20, so hopefully i'll see a little better times for next week!

Im sorry but your friend is full of shit. I had a h22 swap into a 94 civic coupe and i personally annihilated a turboed civic hatch, not sure what motor but obviously it was at the very least a d16 series, all i could hear is his blow off valve going off wayyyyy back there in the dust where i left him, which i think is funny cause he tried to be sneaky and jump me at the line. An H22 swap could keep up with supercharged v8's, vettes, and would blow any honda with anything lesser than the h22 out of the water, except maybe a built b20 swap which i raced and was pretty similar except my third gear pulled abit harder. Ive made many a civic driver feel stupid for thinking they're fast in there turbo si's. Turbo doesnt equal torque, it equals horsepower So use it on the highway otherwise get the fuck outta the way

Ill explain why since you cant, because of the torque/horsepower comment that makes no sense because torque and horsepower are inescapably linked by the fact that horsepower equals torque (in ft-pounds) times RPM divided by 5250, so people who talk as if they are independent are full of it. And yes i am full of it but i still say the turbo d16 aint shit, couldnt smoke a fucking cigarette much less anything on wheels.

you're pretty idiotic. there are plenty of turbo D16 putting out 300, 400hp. stock internals you can get about 200hp. not bad for less than a grand IMO.
