04 GTO vs 05 SRT-4

Ok, traded in my Bonneville for an 04 GTO earlier this week. It has 14k miles, is yellowjacket and an automatic. My best friend has a white, '05 SRT-4. We decided to roll out and see how fast my new GTO was compared to his SRT-4. Both cars are 100% stock down to the paper air filters.

First race was from a 40 roll. My friend honked us down and off we went. Dead even till about 95 when we shut them down, if anything he got about 2 inches on me if that.

Second race was from a 45 roll, going slightly down hill. Friend honked us down and we took off. Again we were about dead even till about 100 when I started to slowly gain on him, we shut down at 105.

Last race was from a stop. My car has some Fuzion ZRi's in the back, and I cant get it to spin the tires for anything (which is a good thing, I guess? hehe :evillol: ) Anyways we lined up next to each other, and I honked us down as he is manual and I'm auto. 3rd honk and I almost break my neck from the launch. I immediatly put 3 cars on him (to his defense, he bogged hard and almost killed it). Put another car on him till about 40mph when we stayed even. We shut down at 115 with me about 4 1/2 cars ahead.

All in all, i'm very impressed. It's faster than my Bonneville was, sounds nicer, is basically brand new, and runs alot smoother. I'm only going to mod the GTO with one thing later on, and that's a Magnacharger. Shooting for about 420 RWHP. Well, if I dont do a few bolt-ons until then while i'm saving up for the magnacharger kit :naughty: .

Cliff notes : stock for stock an a4 GTO is about as fast as a SRT-4 from a roll. Can launch easier though.

AWESOME. Dude, i have to tell you ONE thing..................

PLEASE..PLEASE put that magnacharger on it...... I know it's alot of money, but HOLYSH*T will that thing be the ultimate street launcher. And yes, be glad you hardly get any wheel spin..you probably know that wont be the case when a compressor is used though-cause the power band will go way below 3K i'm guessing.

Once again, those are 2 of my favorite cars of past 2000.. Both excellent, both take good to mods... I bet it feels MUCH better then the bonne..? I love RWD over FWD.

The 4L60E is really sluggish from a roll, even when put behind the mighty LS1. That's what was hurting him.

Infact, 2000LS1Z28 (Bobby) beat DannoSS in a roll race. At the time Bobby's WS6 6speed had only minor bolt ons. DannoSS is automatic, but had Z06 cam and other boltons. And he got him from a roll race.

Danno has better launch control and runs consistan low 13s if I'm not mistaken. But Bobby has better top end pull. Now, Bobby has the Z06 cam and was dyno tuned to 350whp. His car should be able to do low 13s maybe touch high 12s if he can launch with a decent 60'.

If that GTO had a Manual, I think it'd nudge the SRT4 out before they hit above 100mph.

I did it in my Camaro from a roll on in 4th gear at 70mph. I should of been in 3rd, but wanted to be easy on the clutch. And I pulled on the SRT4 pretty quick. By 120 it was easy to tell that I had won with maybe one and half lengths.

Kind of makes me want to get a GTO...big, comfy car that's relatively fast...from the sounds of it you can touch 13's even in an auto.

I would've thought that your car would have the edge from a roll against an SRT-4, is this car stock, or does he have mods??? Anyways, congrats on the close runs.

Just curious, why not the LS2 05'? Not to rip or anything.. I would take that 04' for sure. Just wondering if you got a great deal on the 04' or what? Love those GTO's... Really want one for myself.

Yeah he did, he mentioned it in another thread. Nice kills man, I would have thought even with auto you would have edged out the srt4 by a bit more...but you never know I guess.

And Jayson...did you just call the Gran Prix on steriods sexy?? :grinno:

Oh I forgot, Habibus, you should consider getting a cam package of some sort. A cam really wakes these cars up. If you want to go w/ something street legal you could either get a Z06 cam, or you could get a stealth cam (Sounds stock, and produces more power then the Z06 cam). With the cam, springs, retainers, and a catback, you'll be looking at a good 360whp. That's just my point of advise though. If you want to go the forced induction route, get the STS Turbo. My buddy did, and his car flat out rocks for less money (He's making 482 whp at 8.9 psi).

Yellow is absolutely the best color for the GTO.
If you dont mind me asking how much does a slightly used 5.7 GTO go for now? When the 6.0 came out the local dealers where letting the 04 go for about 26K brand new.

I'm surprised the SRT4 stayed so close! you have over 100 more HP on that car! thats very impressive.

is the Auto quicker then the manual? the 05 GTO auto is faster on the 0-60 then the six speed.

oh and congrats on the new car.

I would only recommend the Z06 cam to those looking to pass emissions and/or still sound mostly stock.
I also believe you shouldn't install a cam without full exhaust. Smaller cams can help you get away with this though. The Z06 cam is truely a smaller cam. In my opinion not worth the money. You gain some power, but mostly at 5000+ RPM's. There are many better choices for cams that give you much better power.
I figure something fairly major like a cam install....you should get your moneys worth.
My car made 376.8 RWHP and 370.8 ft/pounds with NO tune with my old cam. Would have probably been 395-400 RWHP and 390 ft/pounds with a good tune. No more expensive than the Z06 cam install. Maybe $100 cheaper because the Z06 cam is easier to get cheap.
Many people sell LSx cams as well. Used is fine as long as the cam looks in good shape. Roller cams are NOT a wear item.

Not quite a 100 HP advantage, and the GTO weighs probably 800 pounds more.

Ok to answer a few questions, yes we were both 100% stock. Paper air filters, etc. His SRT4 is pretty quick, it's as fast as some modded ones running around (exhaust/intake).

I paid 20,950 for it used, with 14k miles. Pretty good deal especially since it was at a dealership and not private party.

I don't want to do cam/heads because I did a cam in my bonneville (the mildest one) and I didn't like the driveability of it afterwards. Not to mention it was a pain in the butt, took forever, etc. I'm probably going with the magnacharger because of the streetability of it and besides the m112 and basically intake/injectors I can keep the rest of the car stock. I want a nice daily driver with something wicked when I get on it :). Plus I do love the sound of a supercharger, I already miss my L67 whine.

Also, I was seriously considering an '05 with the LS2, but a few things made me go for the LS1. Main thing being price. It would be about 10k more to get a new '05, for 30ish more WHP. I'd rather spend that on mods for an LS1. Also, the LS1 has a much larger aftermarket for it right now, and is proven, and alot easier to mod, as the LS2 PCM is very finicky. Plus it's more of a sleeper. people will think "hey, that's just an '04 not the 400 HP ls2!".

Also a quick couple of small races. I tried to race my friend's evo from a stop, just to see how well I could launch. I launched pretty well but still got killed hard, he beat my by 8 car lengths when I shut down at 95.

Also raced another '04 GTO, black with open headers. Supposedly this guy has some prototype exhaust/headers or something, and a CAI. We were at a stop light. He was revving at me (his car was LOUD) and when the light turned green I stomped it, immediatly I took the lead as my car launches VERY well. He reeled me in at around 50mph, pulling 1 car ahead when I shut it down at 100. Didn't get to talk to the guy because I had to run to get gas, my low fuel light went on during the race.

Overall, i'm very pleased with my car, it's faster than my Bonneville was and it's stock. Now I need to get some money fast to pay for the tags so I can start modding already! :)
