power windows on 96 EB explorer w/flasher

I tried to change my flasher relay, power windows worked fine before I did so. Then it made a buzzing sound and windows didnt work after that. So i put the old one back in. Is that the wrong relay I switched or does the windows also belong to the flasher. If is is wrong then I cannot find the location for the flasher because it matches identical to whatever makes my windows work. PLease help

I have a 99 v8 which has the turn signal flasher under the cover on the steering column - near the hazard lights switch behind the steering wheel. Not sure about yours, but I am thinking its similar.

You might have ruined your new turn signal flasher.......

I switched them at the auto parts store, then i exchanged it for another one thinking maybe it was a defective flasher. My windows work fine with the old flasher i had, just not with the new one. so im wondering does the flasher and windows go together on the same relay.. weird

Ok, just to be sure here - are you trying to fix your windows by putting in a new relay, or are you trying to fix your turn signal flasher? Where was the relay you replaced?

No my windows are fine with the old flasher i had. My turn signals dont work w/ the old flasher or w/ the new one. I switched the flasher that is located under the dash to the right of the steering column. it was in a black box. There were about 6 or 7 plug things and it was the big one in there. When i went to the auto parts store asnd asked for a "flasher" thats what they gave me and its exactly the same size and a 5 prong just like the old one. When i put the new one in, it buzzed, ticked, windows didnt work, turn signals still didnt work. So i exchanged it for another one thinking maybe that part was defective, but it did the same thing with the other new one. So i put the old one back in because everything worked with that one except the signals & hazard lights and there was no buzzing. So now im still driving around with the old one in there but with no signals. Windows are fine. Thanks

Have you checked the power window fuse?

98 SOHc and mine is also in the steering column.

The only way that makes sense is if the auto parts store gave you the same wrong part twice, which would not surprise me.

You might try Ford - take your flasher in with you to the parts counter to make sure you get the right one. It will cost a buck or two more I spose, but it will work.

Yes i did it! iT WAS THE POWER WINDOWS RELAY I HAD ACCIDENTLY SWITCHED, no damage though. The flasher is located on the steering column in a yellow box looking thing that is actually a plug if you pull it. Whew! About time. Now i have working signals again. The repair manaul had told me it was on the side of the steering column, maybe it is for a regular explorer, but not for an eddie bauer's. Thanks all for your help.
