Exhaust

WOOHOO!!!! Next week I finally get to start modding my truck up. I'm dropping about $2,000 on it in a matter of 3 days. I'm putting in the Ford keys and putting 285/75/R16 Cooper Discoverer S/T's under it. I'm also going to put in a K&N 77 series intake. Now my exhaust question is this.....Asides from having the stainless steel option, what are the benefits of putting on a whole cat back exhaust system vice just changing out the muffler? I live in a desert and the environment here isn't really prone to corrosion. I've priced exhaust systems and they're running from $300-700 depending on brand and style and I can just change the muffler for under $100. And also what exhaust does everyone reccomend? Is flowmaster the way to go, or borla, or gibson????

Magnaflow! I have Flowmaster, and besides them being the worst flowing muffler on the market, its loud. But it does have that distinct sound. I personally wouldn't get a flowmaster, but if you're looking for good sound a performance, I would go with Borla or Corsa. They are expensive though. Gibson is good, there are a few people that have a system on the board here.

you might also reconsider you K&N model, and even K& rates the 57 as "producing" more power/torque than the 77:

77:

I have a 57, and I love it. Plus IMHO I don't think the polished aluminum goes all that well with the rest of the engine bay.

Yeah, I have to agree, you kight wat to go with the FIPK. The rating between isn't that much different when you get down to it (diff of .88 hp), but you'll drive yourself nucking futs think about it. They're probably both about the same when you get right donw to it.
I have the flowmaster and have been happy with it, but will be researching the possibility of replacing it with a Magnaflow later.
The most important thing is to get what YOU want and have fun doing it!!!

If you are doing the exhaust for power get long tube headers and custom pipes to Borla or Corsa mufflers. Single in dual out don't gain much if at all, dual all the way gains you enough to notice it...

Now for the Tune... Do we need to school you with THE NAME?????

I bought my FIPK from this guy on ebay:

very fast shipping, and probably the best price around

To tell the truth as it stands right now the truck has all the power that I've ever needed out of it (so far) so I'm not really doing any of this as a performance upgrade. I'm actually trying to squeeze another 1-3mpg out of her at this point. I know that upgrading to the 285's isn't going to help there but I want them for offroad purposes. The reason I'm going with the 77 series instead of the FIPK is for the exact reason given against it above. I actually like the look of the polished aluminum vice the black on it FIPK. As for the tune......no you don't have to say a word, but Allen is going to have to wait until tax time to get my $425 and the same goes with the headers....I've only got about 2k to play with this time around and tires are an absolute must and that will eat up over $900. The ones I've got on there now are almost slicks and winter is coming in the high desert.

Blender you may have just changed my mind. The cheapest I've been able to find either the 77 or the FIPK is at my local Kragen autoparts store (go figure that) and the 77 there is $254 but this guy has it for $189?? I just hope he's still got one for that price after the first when I can actually buy it. Thanks!

Yeah, and he is SUPER nice to deal with. I bought a K&N filter for my wife's civic from him, and then contacted him via email to ask him about the FIPK. The total, including shipping, for my wife's filter was $40 shipped, and then we went around ebay on the FIPK, and he just stuck my wife's filter in the FIPK box and charged me an extra $196. My grand total for the FIPK and my wife's filter was $236, which included shipping. You might drop him an email and tell him your situation and what you want. I'm sure he'd be wiling to work with you.

I know most everyone here is partial to the K&N set up, but you said you went with bigger tires for off road right, well might i suggest you take a look at Volant intakes, they use an enclosed box with a huge conical filter and non restrictive intake pipe thats heat resistant, they are a little bit pricey but if you look around you can find a good deal, they also come available with a ram air pipe. As for exhaust I went with Flowmaster 40 series (loud) but Ive also had borla on my old car and liked it also.http://www.volantperformance.com/

You might tke a look at this dude. I got mine for $193 plus $12 shipping and I had it in 3-4 days. It was the best deal I found at the time. He doesn't have any to offer right now, but you can try contacting him and ask if he has one or will post one with a buy-it now.

Magnaflow if you want the best bang for the buck.
Corsa if you like more of a sport car sound.
B&B catback if you want the baddest sounding catback made and you have alot of money to blow on a catback.
