Won't go into gear

I just got an '86 Cherokee, 2.8L. Problem is, it won't go into first or second gear. My first instinct was engine mounts, but they seem to be okay. Operative words being 'seem to'.
I need to bleed the clutch also. I doubt that would be the reason. Any ideas?

A sencer possably that maybe went bad that is on your clutchplate. it could be locking you out, but thats just a long shot.

IM not exactly sure but my 89 wouldn't shift up until it got close to 5000 rpms's i put a new throttle poisition snsor in and it works like a charm now...u might want to check that out...refer to ur manual for instructions to check it.

I should have clarified that it is a manual tranny. I'm gonna try a new slave cylinder and make sure the system is bled. Then on to bigger stuff.

If you have air in your clutch system, this could prevent the clutch from disengaging and could certainly be the cause of your shifting problem.

Try, with engine off, shifting while rolling the jeep forward slowly. If it goes into gear, then it is most likely a clutch problem. Bleed the the clutch and check for leaks.
