MN fire marshall says Blue Earth blaze was arson
By Kyle J. MacArthur, Register Editor
A fire causing extensive damage to a duplex in Blue Earth Aug. 20 is considered an act of arson by the Minnesota State Fire Marshall.
Blue Earth Police Chief Dean Vereide says preliminary reports say the blaze at 427 East Fifth Street was caused by an "accelerant" - likely gasoline.
"The fire was set. It wasn't an accident," Vereide says.
City police responded to the call at 12:41 a.m. and when the volunteer fire department arrived, flames were exiting from an entry way on the home's west side.
Vereide says five people were in the two apartments when the fire started.
All escaped without injury.
However, radiant heat from the nearby blaze warped the vinyl siding on the home next door.
Firefighters were called back to the apartment later in the day to extinguish smoldering debris and hotspots.
Vereide says a $2,500 reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to an arrest in the case. To provide information, he suggests calling the arson hotline at (800) 723-2020.
An investigation continues by the Blue Earth Police Department with assistance from the fire marshall's office and the Blue Earth Fire Department
