assembly lube or oil

93 DOHC quad ... do i need to use assembly lube when putting in the cams and lifters or just use motor oil?i would think motor oil but someone told me to use assembly lube...any comments??

If I were doing it I would use assembly lube. You might be able to make due with motor oil, but it's better to put forth the extra buck and be safe then sorry. Do it right and use assembly lube.

Use assembly lube it stays there until after you start it up & provides better lube until the oil gets there. Its cheap and you can get it at any parts store.
If you had your lifters out, they drained down on you, I always load them with oil. (with a syringe with a greese needle on the end) Then put some assembly lube in the oil hole and on the outside of the lifter to keep the oil in there while putting them together. Yes most of it will run out as soon as you put the cam on there, but I consider it worth it because I hate that annoying tapping sound lifters with air in them make. This will not eliminate that noise, but will help reduce the amount of time you hear it and also reduce the wear on the cams & lifters.

Nice roller lifters! Are they hydraulic lifters?
Wouldn't you want the lifters cool when you install them in the block?
Since metal expands as it gets heated up and your trying to fit them inside a machined bore in the cold block? Im not saying don't warm them up to get the oil in every nook & cranny, but then let them cool down to room temp before instalation.

They won't be real hot when they go in.
Gen III shortblocks are a little different, the lifters will install/remove very easily cold or hot. Either way, I will be installing them when fairly cooled down.
And yes, they are hydraulic roller. Damn things can be expensive.

my lifters did drain down some.i could feel the air pocket when i shook them....how bad should i expect a tapping and how long should i expect it to last?

The tapping should go away in 10 or 15 mins of idling, don't put a load on the motor while its tapping, just let it idle in park or neutral. It will sound like you dropped some lego's in the intake, not too bad but annoying, since the lifters will not pump up it will not be opening the valves as far as it should, so the car will not run smooth or have the power it should have, be patient, its worth it. I would say if it doesn't stop after 30 mins or so its not a dry lifter issue your hearing. (im shooting from the hip here, maybe a full time mechanic will know for sure, but i figure 15 mins max)
