halfshafts

I have a quick question. I had my halfshafts removed and was changing the CV boots. Well I was trying to put them back in and I noticed that the inside joint wasn't shorting like it was when I took it off. It also was making some noise when I moved it around. Did i ruin it or is it okay? If I did mess it up. Do I need to replace it or can I fix it? I would really appreciate some advice.
