Chevy Venture van

First thing in the morning or when my van is cold it starts right up but when it is hot it dies at least 3 or 4 times for it will stay running. We have replaced the fuel filter. Someone suggested that it is the fuel pump. It has been doing this for about a year and the mechanic that works on our cars says he can't figure out the problem. If it were the fuel pump, would it keep limping along like this for a year? Once it gets going, it doesn't stall or die and it seems to drive and run fine.
Any ideas?
