well ive been bouncing back and forth for that past 3 months about what I should start with on my car...lower it, rims, exhaust... well i finally decided to start working on my exhaust so the other night I ordered my downpipe from 3sx (if any body knows how long their shipping usually takes i would appreciate it if you would tell me since they didnt) and then tonight i made my own race pipe...it cost me a whole $19.03...not bad compared to $50 and it works just as well...well i hope it does im installing it tomarrow. was just sitting around so i decided to share my excitement for the week

3sx shipping is usually very very fast. 3 days max. right now, is pretty unusually slow b/c of the after effects of hurricane Katrina. i spoke with them on the phone Monday, and they told me this; i was pondering purchasding some Redline MTX fluid, but they said it wouldn't necessarily arrive by Thursday, even if i shipped it 2nd day air. so that's the deal with 3sx shipping right now. its not their fault, it just something with UPS.
race pipe for under 20 bucks is a deal! i got mine for about 25 bucks off e-bay. as for downpipe, you could have gotten one from ek2mfg on 3si for under 250 shipped. he makes some very nice stuff, and at a very competitive price. nice welding too!
good luck on the downpipe + race pipe. let us know how it turns out (power added + sound).

to remove the rust from the bolts, get some kind of rust penetrant. some use PB blaster, i just use 3 in 1 Rust Penetrant. you may find it at an auto store, but i know they sell stuff like that at Home Depot and Lowe's.
just soak the bolt in rust penetrant, let it sit for about 30 mins, then come back and try and it should break free.

i had to heat up the bolts with a small blow torch to get mine off, try that

Yeah I got a ATR downpipe from 3sx it took about a week if I remember correctly. But I love it, definantly worth the money. And yes the bolts were a bitch.

one question for you guys... will that TT downpipe fit the NA... I've got a SOHC...and my stock downpipe really holds back that motor, and is rusting through... I've got 3.5" exhaust after the stock downpipe... completely custom... sounds nice... but I want a bit more power...

no, the TT downpipe will not fit the NA. just look at the pics below. the TT downpipe has room for the pre-cats and is shorter than the NA dp. the NA dp (Fed-Spec) does not have pre-cats, and so it is longer.
HOWEVER, the NA Cali-Spec DOES have pre-cats, so if you have a Cali-Spec NA, a TT dp MIGHT fit, but not likely. you said you have a 3.5" exhaust after the dp? the NA dp goes from two 2" to one 2.5", and the TT dp goes from two 2.5" to one 3"....so neither of those will fit your application. sounds like you need a custom job!

actually... I think that there's an adapter plate on the front of my catalyctic convertor... so the NT would prolly work... I just couldn't member who sold an NA dp... that was gonna be my next question... thanks...

isnt 3.5" a little big for an na? i always thought 3" was pushing it, but if it works why not

Sry guys... I was told when I bought the car that it was 3.5 in... but after I said that and looked at some pics I had... (I didn't have the car with me at work)... I thought it looked a little small... I went and measured... it's a 2.5" dual exhaust, so everything should work out... I knew that the cat had a plate on it... b/c it was bolted in place... so the NA dp should work... and btw my car is fed-spec 91 SOHC... so after I get that trans rebuilt, the lsd in, lightweight flywheel, then I'll be putting on that dp and test pipe... thank God I don't have to pass OBD inspection (it only has straight pipes anyway, cat's gutted and no mufflers)

well i actually just got done putting in my down pipe about 5 mintues ago...i hate bolts...thats the statement of the week, ended up just cutting off the back flange and now i am in process getting rid of the section after the cat (just up to the next flange) whats up with that piece anyways, is that a resonator and a mini muffler? has anyone else gotten rid of all of the and just made it a straight pipe? but anyways a i still have to bolt in the race pipe and add a flange, went to put in the race pipe and relized i forgot to buy the bolts...

sry bro, most of my exhaust work was done to the car when I bought it...had it since January, enjoyed it only a few months though, damn local shops can do a crappy job...

ive been having the same problem as beef, i made my own race pipe with 2.5'' and welded my own flanges on for under 18 bucks. but for like 2 weeks iv been trying to get the cat loose and iv tryed just about everything. I am about to put the car on a lift and weld a 6ft piece of pipe to the bolt lol seriously its pissing me off.

well does anyone know if it is ok that i just replae that piece of pipe up after the catylic converter up to the next flange with just a straight pipe?

I'm not sure which pipe you're talking about... could you describe it and/or include a picture
Linebckr49
10-11-2005, 05:25 PM
i think you're talking about one of the resonators. sure you can replace it with a straight pipe, but your exhaust note will be much louder. and most likely, the sound you will get won't be very pleasant. but who knows, just try it and let us know how it goes.
