starting problems

My husband's truck (1993 Ford F-150, in-line 6, 255,000 miles) is having starting issues. WHen you turn the key to start it just clicks, like it's dead, but after trying a couple more times, it will usually start. But this problem does not happen everytime you try to start. He's cleaned the battery posts, replaced he cables and terminals, and replaced the starter relay, but it hasn't helped. We don't want to invest a huge amount of money, but can't afford to replace the truck either. Any thoughtw on what might be the problem?
Thanks in advance for any body who can help.

Thanks for your responses. He did change the selenoid, which did not work, and since the problem was getting worse, he finally just replaced the starter, although not very cheap. Seems to be working fine now.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
