Car seems to have a little trouble starting when the engine isn't cold but isn't hot such as after its been sitting for only an hour or two. It also idles a little rough but very very slightly.

No problem with startup when cold or hot. It's weird like I said.

I am going to try cleanign the MAF sensor first since I just had the injector/fuel system cleaned and plugs/wires changed from an intermittent misfire issue. If I am correct, you just clean it with electronics cleaner and reinstall it after drying.

also check the idle air control (IAC) valve. It's an electric stepper motor that works like a choke on a carburator. Since your car is almost 6 model years old and only has 48k on it, I assume that it sits quite often. Fuel deposits build up on the pintle and in the bore in whick it rides, causing the IAC to stick. You can remove the IAC and clean it and it's bore, just be careful not to move the pintle in or out, or you will mess up it's calibration. On the MAF sensor, be VERY careful around the wire elements if you attempt to clean it, as they are VERY fragile, and if you mess them up, get ready to fork over $150+ for a new one. Use electronic parts cleaner that leaves no residue, instead of carb cleaner on the MAF.

I bought it last year with 38k and those are of course very low miles.

I figure that it like you said sat for a long time. I had one of those MotorVac treatements done on my fuel system, so would that clean the IAC valve by running the cleaner through the fuel system. Oh yeah, I changed the fuel filter not 1k miles ago.

It's not like it has any trouble starting; it starts right up or shuddering when idling. But its starting funnier than what I would expect.

I think that type of cleaning system only cleans the injector rail and related components, I do not believe they clean the throttle body and it's related passages.

just thought I'd pipe in here - an IAC appears to cost around $30 from parts stores near me...

you mention to be careful not to move the pintle in or out b/c of calibration issues... in my Haynes manual, it discusses a little bit about the IAC, and it says to make sure that the pintle doesn't extend more than like 1 1/8 inches from the collar. It says that if it is out farther, then you can basically push it in (carefully, of course) to make it within the 1.125". It also tells you to reset the ECM by putting the ignition to "On" for 5 seconds, turn it off, wait for 10 seconds, then start the car. (Does this "reset" method reset the whole ECM or just the sensor reading from the IAC?) It says to reset the ECM after adjusting the IAC to "recalibrate"

I am still having some idling issues, so I am about to check my IAC - if it is really dirty, I guess I will probably just buy a new one since it is only about $30...

I remember the friend of ours who did that for me said he cleaned throttle body components. However, I will check it out myself.

well, i took out my IAC on my lunch break - i haven't looked at a new one, but it looked pretty dirty to me... I did the best i could cleaning it off with just a paper towel, trying to be very careful (i.e. concerned more with not screwing it up than getting all the crud off of it)... put it back in, and it was still idling a bit rough at first - after driving about 2 miles, the rough idle seems to be *better* but not cured... I think I may just go and get a new one after work...

Hey Wylie, what's up and how are you? That's an understatement. I thought if I put on my reading glasses it would correct it...lol :lol2:

It's the only shot I had of a MAF sensor which was taken with a cell phone camera. Not too good zoom or macro capability.

I plan on getting a 5 megapixil or up for XMas. How's your GP running?

Hey it doesn't get any better, A cell phone? thats a good shot then.
Rode the bike today its still warm here I think I'll buy myself one of those iPod nano for Xmas.
Then I'll have tunes on the bike.

I was in Calgary for two weeks and they gave me a Impala to drive what a pile of dew that was,it was fun running the hell out of it though.
My GP felt like a race car when I got back.
You don't know how good you got it till its gone.

Thanks for all the help. I am swamped with tests and projects this week for school, so I can't get a look at it until Thursday at the earliest.

It's not even a major issue, but I am an anal SOB when it comes to car repair. If you have a mindset that every car you drive is cursed like me, then every little minute RPM flutter, intermittent click or pop indicates its falling apart....

I'm sure a lot of little issues are due to the previous owner letting it sit more than it needed too.

That's not a problem anymore, it's getting a healthy 1000-1200k/month now.

Im kind of the same way w/ my car...if i feel something is wrong...even the slightest thing i like to fix it....im really fussy about suspension and steering...i hate when the steering pulls or the steering wheel is a little off when the car is going straight...alot of my friends tell me im obsessive w/ my cars, like changing the oil and filter every 3000miles, or by changing the air filter every 8000 miles...but i do remind them my cars generally get alot more trouble free miles, less breakdowns, and and get higher miles averall

Your right there for example my ex 95gp had over 500,000km on it before I had but it down.
Never had any major trouble with it.
