Which gen?

I have enough money to buy a 1st gen vr4 now (and maintain it). I'd liek to know if there would be any reason to hold out for a 2nd gen? In a couple months I could afford a 2nd gen but it would clean out my wallet pretty much. Would it be worth it? Aside from the body they seem to be nearly identical and i prefer the 1st gen look. Is there much (if any) difference in reliability (assuming it was taken at least decent care of)? Parts cost? Thx for any ideas and help!

your fine with the 1st gen, whatever you can do with the 2nd gen you can do with the first.
unless you plan on adding some huge power, like 150hp+
1st gen have 2 bolt, and 2nd gen have 4
but its still workable
Essentially, the following internals were changed mid 93:
93.5 has 4 bolt main, 91-93.5 had 2 bolt main (although it doesn't really matter unless you plan on modding the hell out of it).
93 has forged connecting rods, 91-92 does not
93 has forged crankshaft, 91-92 does not
93 has forged steel inserts inside cast aluminum pistons, 91-92 does not
93 has forged steal 25 spline output shaft, 91-92 have a cast 18 spline.
93 has stronger internals in the transfer case, and is a different design than earlier ones

alright thanks for the info. I dont really plan on adding that much hp. I simply dont have the funds. Isnt the 93 the last year of the old body style or did the body style change mid 93?

thats some really nice info youngvr4...you know your stuff or at least did your homework.
Ive got a 93 vr-4...you said they changed to a 4-bolt in mid 93...so to you i ask...do all 93s have a 2 bolt of just some? If some have the 4-bolt, how can i tell if mine does?
as for which gen, i'd say go for the 1st but get a 93 if you can find one...like young mentioned, there were a few key issues with the car that were fixed in 93. Its nice to have some change in your pocket if your a 3s owner. Even if you find one thats been well taken care of, theres always something to spend money on, show or go, neccesary or not.

it was changed over in 92. All 93+ have forged internals both N/A and TT, and 25 spline trannies, the N/A has a 2 bolt in all years, the TT has a 4 bolt in 92.5+ cars.

yes, this is one thing i noticed when i did my tt conversion 2 and a half years ago. The oil return line made for a 93+ car is not long enough for a 2 bolt engine because the 4-bolt oil pans are bigger.
