Hello, I just bought a 96 Pontiac Grand am, with a 3.1 V6. The car only has 96,000 Miles on it and it's been running Fine for the most part so far. How ever I do have one major Concern The other night I got a call on my cell phone and it was an emergency so i had to go quick. And I was being hard on it (Pettle to the floor), and all the sudden I turned a corner and started to take off again and it would only go up 3rd gear and it wouldnt shift out, almost like it was in neutral or something and it repeated this a couple times untill i started slowing down. Then Everything was back to normal. Should i be conserned about it, or is it just some kind of safety Feature? PLLLLleaaase hellp!

Check and make sure that the fluid level is proper. This sounds like an overheating problem that may be caused by a low fluid condition. Also you may want to put in a can of sea foam or lucas transmission treatment. It should help should you have a problem with sticking valves or solenoids. If that does not help then take it to a tranny shop and have them diagnose it for you.

Hey thanks a lot for the advise. im considering Just getting the fluid changed. But i do however have one more question. Is it better to get the transmission flushed or just get the service, with the fluid change and Filter? Thanks A tonnnnnn I really apreciate it, I had an S-10 before this and the transmission Dropped on that and it costed 1500 to fix. Ouch =(, and i just cant afford another one of those. especialy cause it was only last winter that i got it down and then i flipped the truck last saturday and went out and bought this Fiiiiine car. But Thanks for everything.

In my experience on this forum, it is much better to change just the fluid and filter than it is to flush the transmission. High mileage transmissions that have been flushed often go completely in 10K miles or less. Changing the fluid and filter will help to maintain the transmission in proper order. You may want to add a can of Lucas transmission additive or a can of Sea Foam additive to the fluid when you have it changed. Both are very good additives and will free up stuck valves and help with other issues. Good Luck!
