I'm replacing a speedometer cable on a 1991 Rs Camaro. I bought the car knowing the speedometer didnt work, but when I went to see why, there was no cable at all, none whatsoever. So after a little while I bought a speedometer cable replacement kit. Looking at the kit now I realize I may not have everything I need. I have the cable, but do I need a cable casing? And if so where could I find one. Thanks

i had a 92 rs and the speedometer doesnt use a speedometer cable which is probably why you couldnt find a cable on it...the problem with mine was a clip in the transmission and it was $5.95 to fix.

Thats weird because I looked into a repair manual and its got a section on speedometer cable replacement. Anyway, do you know what the chp was called?

sorry no i dont remember it was around 3 years ago i had that car and the speedometer didnt work when i bought it and i went to chevrolet garage and asked about ordering a speedometer cable for it and they tried looking it up but they couldnt find one in their catalog so i went and talked to a mechanic and he told me they didnt have speedometer cables and he fixed it for me...mine was a 92 so it may be different...i was thinking they were the same but i may be wrong.

91's are the same, it's electronic, there's a part on the tailshaft of the tranny that has a wire harness plugged into it, when you unbolt that part and pull it out it will have one of the speedo gears on it, the "driven" gear if i recall correctly. your problem probably lies there or within the cluster itself.

if you got a repair manual that is for all third gen camaros... then it would cuz earlier third gens did use cables... yours does not

If that's the only gauge that doesn't work, I think you need a new VSS (vehicle speed sensor).

First off...thanks for the help, I realize now that there is no cable at all. Secondly I would imagine the problem is the speed sensor...I just called a local shop and they said itd be 60 bucks for the sensor... Am I missing something? Speed said his was a 6 dollar fix

He said, "the problem with mine was a clip in the transmission and it was $5.95 to fix." I take it he didn't need to replace the speed sensor. He may be referring to just a wire pigtail. $60 is about right for your VSS.
