2001 Yukon XL, wife's vehicle. Has complained for more than a year of "Loud" clattering noise from engine compartment and vibration thru steering wheel upon, or soon after start-up with AC on. Acceleration and turning may exacerbate problem(?) Turning off AC terminates noise and vibration, can usually turn it back on moments later with no further problem. Was never able to experience the problem myself and as my wife's been known to describe minor interior trim panel rattles as "deafening" I didn't pay it much attention. Recently was driving it when it did this bit, my reaction was, "Holy @#$%". Soon after it lost the AC belt, immediate thought was compressor, but didn't seem to be frozen. Replaced the belt, still did the bit described above on occasion, thought the AC worked. Blew another belt, mechanic still didn't think compressor, replaced belt and tensioner. Belt's gone again. Neighbor's a Ford mechanic, he looked it up for TSB's found several that read like everything in the AC system should be replaced-belt, tensioner, compressor, accumulator, condenser, etc. WTF?

It sounds like you have a compressor that has come apart internally. The problem is that this is a sealed system so the metal is trapped in the system somewhere.
You can try and replace the compressor, accumulator and orifice tube and most likely you will have a repeat failure.
The proper way to repair this is to flush the system and install inline filters to prevent any metal that my be remaining in the system from getting to the compressor. (along with replacing the compressor , orifice tube and accumulator.)
Unfortunately with failures like this it gets rather expensive to properly repair the system to prevent future failures (sounds like the entire system has to be replaced, but not really).
I have had customers opt for the cheap way out only to return days or even hours later with a repeat failure again.
Spend the money on the front end will save you money in the long run. Find a technician that can perform a proper A/C system flush and has A/C filters and suction screen filters.
The filters will prevent any contamination from entering the compressor.
