Squeeking problem

I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Galant. I recently (as in yesterday, 9/19) put on another alternator. When I turned on my car there is a loud squeeking/ sqeeling noise coming from my engine/ alternator. I took of the negative battery post and it stop the squeeling. But when I connected the cable back to the post it went right back to squeeling while sitting idle. Minutes later after warming up it went away until I pressed the accelerator and the noise came back every time I pressed the accelerator. My question would be if anyone knows or had this problem after installing an alternator, could it be that my belts are too tight? Can I spray something on it to make the noise go away?

when i had my 1996 galant last year, it did the same thing and it may be the harmonic balancer. if not that, try turning the belts inside out.

Has anybody figured out anything on this problem because my piece of crap keeps eating belts and alternators. The thing has the same squealing problem that you are talking about.

It's probably the harmonic balancer. If you can see a crack in the rubber medium sandwiched inside the balancer or if you haven't change it for the last 100,000 km, it problably need changing.

But saying that the pulley on the alternator also wear out if the belt has been squeeling for too long.

You'll notice when you start the engine and it fires the battery is at its lowest so the regulator increases the voltage to the ameature and brake the rotating mass of the alternator therefore causing your belt to slip. try turning your lights on and a/c and rear demister straight after starting and it will prove whether or not you fix the problem pretty quickly. so if the tiny little "V's" on the alternator pulley are worn out, the peak of the rib of the belt will bottom out on the pulley and you'll see shiny little metal dots in the base of the "V's" on the belt.
