check your strut mounts, steering nuckles, its most likely the bearings in your strut mount that make turning your wheels without pulling the spring along with it..if you take your strut mount out and apart theres a plate inbetween the upper and lower shell, the plate should be pretty thick cuz in that plate there are a bunch of little ball bearings...if the seal on that plate is broken those little balls fall out and if they all fall out..when you turn your steering wheel without those ball bearings your actually pulling/turning the spring ON the strut itself...thats what makes that bang when turning...IF in fact it is that bearings thats causing that noise on your car i would recommend fixing it FAST cuz you can actually warp your spring.

You might also check your outer CV joints. I had a vehicle that tore it's boot, allowing the grease to be flung out. I didn't realize it until after the CV joint started to wear itself into pieces. It wasn't a constant noise, but it was similar to what you described. The car would also lurch a little bit along with that as the joint would twist itself back to the way it was suppose to be.
