***Updates on page 2***

I started with the Tamiya KPGC10 Skyline 2000GT-R kit...And a fujimi nostalgic tuning parts set.

The S20 is gone, as typical practise in Japan when the fragile S20 blew during the 70's/80's was to slot in a heavily modified L-series straight six of some sort, being common, modification parts common due to the zed aftermarket, and able to make staggering amounts of power, 310+hp NA is not uncommon.
I'm using the Fujimi L24 to represent a worked L28-3.1 , with some carbs I robbed from the remains of a Lamborghini kit by ?? that, though probably actually IDAs or IDFs, simulate DCOE webers quite well. They have sakatsu turned alloy 2.5mm bellmouths, and a (real) sheet aluminium heatshield between the top of the headers and the carbs.
As it happens I'm not far into it apart from getting the carbs ready to fit the manifold and slotting in the bellmouths (which my crappy camera won't show) so here's a pic of the short motor sitting loose in the Tamiya engine bay.

To be honest, the tamiya steel rims don't do it for me...
As such, the body is receiving flares front (around 3.5mm deep) and rear (about 5.5mm deep) which I burgled, plundered, purloined from a couple of non scale cartoon style kits (Datsun 720 ute and Hilux ute, copies of mitsuwa kits, made in china and $2.99 AUD...).
The pics show them just glued on, I will mould them on further with putty and "drill" countersink holes for "rivets".
The wheels I have chosen are Fujimi's 345 RS-Watanabe RS-8 kit in anthracite grey - afaik they measure up to about 15x13" on the back and 15x11" fronts, haha. I had some techno TV-R's at the time so I was trying those on.

After all that, the flares don't quite cover the rear tyres - they hang out ~1mm, though I think thats quite acceptable and won't be very noticeable. Plus, nothing a little negative camber won't help, haha...

Anyway, thats a start, hopefully more progress pics in a week or so.

I love the rear rims. What are they? Sorry, might have missed it while scanning over the post.

Techno Racing TV-R from the Fujimi SA22C RX7 kit - not sure if they are available aftermarket or not? They have some massive 345/35r15 semi slicks on them too.. Front rims are the fronts from the Fujimi 345 RS-watanabe RS8 pack, with similar tyres to the Techno TV-R's.

I'm thinking I might do the rear wheel centres Hot pink..

Thanks. Are you going to have the rear sitting a bit higher than the front?

Yeah, compared to the pics it will be about 1mm higher in the front and about 2-3mm higher in the back. I still think it will be very low with a slightly tail down stance, but not as pronounced as in those suspension-less pics.

Period cars are boss! I like what you're doing all around, though I feel that you might be well served to push the rear wheels in a bit since you're doing so much work on it already. Nevertheless, this will be cool, you've got tons of skill to actualize all that information you've got floating around in your head. I can't wait to see this thing come to life.

Yeah, the back wheels will sit approximate 1mm further in than that, the body/chassis is just sitting on the tyres there, lol...And a bit of negative camber on the back will draw the eye in and make any projection less noticeable. I'm figuring out the rear suspension at the moment, hopefully will have some progress soonish..

I've also decided to cut the tamiya wheelarch flares and use the bottom half of them to fill out the lower wheelarch area.

And a question for the gallery... NOS kit? Thought a triple carbed, 3.1 litre L28 with nitrous oxide could be interesting...

Sweet! I love the old Skylines. Most of the cars I've seen in Japan do have L-series 6cyl power instead of the super expensive, rare S20.

What are you using as an intake manifold to support the triple carbs?
Yup, it's a shame the exhast header will be covered by the heatshield and carbs...I might leave it off the 3.1 I'm doing.
Love the fender flares and 345s out back...suspension mods should be interesting!
Great project.

Great project.

I've extended the flares now (added the bottom half of the tamiya flares to the rears where they are cut off), and have fabbed most of the headers (mix of S20 and L24 parts with a styrene flange plate), the intake manifold is made of styrene bar/strip - two y shaped sections for the outside carbs and two straight bars for the centre one. I might leave the photos out for now as my camera simply can't capture the small detail stuff. I was worried the 2.5mm bellmouths would be too small but they look good.

Still scratching my head on the rear suspension, but I'll come up with something! Its difficult to mess with the rideheight given the trailing arms are moulded onto the X-member/moustache bar.

Relocate the trailing arms and move the springs/shocks accordingly!

I've gotten a little further, the rear flares are extended down to the sills like they should be - used a combo of scrap styrene and cut down Tamiya kit parts.

Anyway, here's where the motor is at. The Fujimi L-series is rather poor on detail - No distributor! So I'm waiting on a Sakatsu metal dizzy and some plug wire from HLJ. Also need to make the fuel fittings, throttle linkages and so forth...But I've got the carbs and header on, heatshield on... Need to come up with some engine mounts yet, not sure how to do it just yet.. I'm sorry about the pics not being better, its hard guessing depth of field for capturing ANY detail with a cheap 1.4 megapixel camera..

looking great man!... but i wish i could have access to some of those parts locally... (i dont like to order on the net) because i have that tamiya kit waiting for me to lay my hands on it, and while i dont mind the stock look, doing it up like that would be so much better... i'll be keeping an eye on this one forsure!

Love the carbs, manifold and heat shield!! Hope mine turns out as good :iceslolan \
Nice touch with the red valve cover too.
You defintely need some better pics though, please invest in a good camera to show off the work!

Well, finally I'm basically done with the bodywork, ready for final primer now.
The wheelarch flares/blister fenders/overfenders/whatever are on their 3rd incarnation now, and wider than ever:grinyes:, and I've fabricated the front spoiler up out of styrene sheet .
It still barely tucks the tyres under with the 345 RS-Watanabe set, but thats cool, thats how it should look!
You can't see it, but underneath I have cut and shut the front crossmember to clear the L28's Sump pan (basically cut the control arms off, flipped the centre 180 degrees so the bend is at the front) - the L-series motor fits like a glove now. I also shortened the front struts approximately 3mm, and chopped approximately 1.5mm out of the rear springs. I also had to shorten the halfshafts after I modded the rear trailing arms for some camber. It will have Fujimi Brembo brakes on the front and stock drums on the back (if I was more motivated, finned rear drums would have been cooler). I converted the front struts to take fujimi wheel pegs, and the rear wheels were converted to male.

FYI, the rear flares are about 3 times the width of the standard ones and the inside of the tyres are tucked up against the inner fender at the top..

Still have a long way to go in detailing the motor and interior yet, and I have to make up brackets for the big oil cooler thats going on the front, but its getting a lot closer now.

Oh, I meant to ask a question too...
Have to decide what to do from the headers back, after some opinions what people visualise as looking better?
-Side pipe (exiting passenger side just in front of the rear wheel)
-Centre pipes (like Davescholz.com 240z , exiting centre rear)
-Smallish cannon in standard position (fujimi machined "wagon muffler").

TOUGH!
The 345s are mean! I would do anything to make them at least flush with the over fenders(good job on forming them!). IMHO it looks funny when tires stick out past the fenders, except on a truck:grinno:
Maybe move them inboard a few mm?

For exhaust, I'm a sucker for stock looking...an aftermarket in the stock location would look nice!

I have the fronts flush now, the rears sit in line with a vertical line from the wheelarch lip - but I guess I could add another 1mm or so maybe, although in scale terms they are equivalent to almost 12" extra width in total already....
I promise the completed car will be photographed with a much better camera, :banghead:

I personally think that the car would benefit more with a shorter exhaust. then again, it would look highly modified so you might wanna consider adding a little more engine detail/tuning parts. if thats what your aiming for, i suggest the side. plus it would look better matched with your wide slicks. or for a tamer look, the cannon will do.

Slight update, more horrible shite camera pics (don't worry, finished pics will be outdoors and with a decent camera!).
Rear flares are now ~1.5mm wider each side and cover the tyres (with a bit of camber), and I carved up the lights/grille to make the headlight blanks (built up styrene sheet over the headlight bowls and smoothed over with putty). Painted bellmouths and oil cap with clear blue for anodised look, and a bit of contrast.

Winter is setting in so I may not get to the paint for a loooooooong time but should still get to attack the interior, underbody and finish the motor ASAP.
