Does anyone watch the show Pinks on Speed? I love that show!! I wish it was an hour instead of 1/2 hour. The host (forget his name) the bald dude is cool. He keeps everyone in line for the most part. The negotiating is cool, I just wish that they would use the tree so there would be no question of someone leaveing early or not. Like last week with the AWESOME blue 5.0 against the black Z28. Also the whole thing with lengths, I know they're trying to keep it "old school" but all they have to do is just bracket race with the tree. Run the first race heads up, then come back and the loser says I need 1 second or 3 seconds or whatever. Because you may have a car that likes the higher mph or the last couple hundred feet of the track, and with lengths the slower car doesn't get to run exactly a 1/4 mile. I also wish they would show us the times of these cars. Don't get me wrong, I love the show, I've taped almost all of them(yeah I know, I need Tivo). I just think they could make it better if they did these things. AND SHOW US MORE, MAKE IT AN HOUR OR 2 OR 3!!! I LOVE PINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah, thats a bad ass show, for those of u who havent heard of it, its this show where 2 cars get to race down 1/4 mile track 3 times, whoever wins 2 outta 3 gets the other dudes keys handed to him. at first it was all street cars, but now theyve raced some funny cars (i think), and i saw an episode with go-karts.

giddyup50
09-20-2005, 08:26 PM
Yeah some shows at first I saw they did 2 out of 3. Most of them lately have been 3 out of 5. I've seen every show, they have not done any funny cars. They have done motorcycles and like you said go-carts. I thought the go-carts were BORING!! Give me the 1/4mile with cars, trucks(kind of), and even mototcycles(hope I never see the bikes on there again but still better than go-carts). The past 2 weeks they had 5.0 mustangs, one raced a 67nova, and the other raced the tall guy from the first show with his 97 Z28. Ofcourse both 5.0s won, although I must admit the blue 5.0 last week did jump the line. I taped it and watched it in slow-mo and frame by frame and he did jump. That is why I wish they would use the tree and stage lights so there would be no question if they jump or not! DON'T FORGET PINKS IS ON WEDNESDAY AT 7:30PM AND 10:30PM (CENTRAL TIME,ILLINOIS FOR ME) C-YA GUYS. I LOVE PINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The show's a good idea, but I agree, too much talk and not enough race. Plus they get into all the "give me some lengths" crap. Makes it hard for me to watch, but I'm a Run-what-you-brung type. I think smalltown bracket races are more fun to watch. But me personally, I'd rather be in the staging lanes myself. Kinda like the fact that I'll go in the pits and have a ball watching my old man race dirt oval, and help him out all I can, but you couldn't get me to watch a NASCAR race on TV.

Now I'm really worried. Tonight's episode showed them very clearly heating nitrous bottles with a blowtorch. Not cool. Now a bunch of weekend warriors that are using nitrous for the first time are gonna think that that's cool. Once again, not cool.

Don't worry cobra306, that's how we get rid of the idiots in the world, I think we call it "the clearing of the gene pool" (I think). Besides that one was a rerun, it was the first episode from back in June(I think). So don't worry we've already been losing some idiots before you even knew how they were dying.

I love the show. The 5.0 and Z28 races were awesome, but my favorite had to be the one with the 442 and the Nova, I just felt bad for him after his hood flew up, but all is well since he won the Nova.

Personally I think the show is kind of stupid. "Give me this many lengths." "I need so many lengths." And the host seems to take it way to seriously. If you want drag racing just watch NHRA. Plus, I also heard the show is fake. They race and everyone keeps their cars. (I'm not saying it's fake, just something I heard.) sorry to rain on yalls parade, but just a matter of opinion. :2cents:

giddyup50
10-07-2005, 09:57 PM
Come on Karl, how can you not like the show? I do agree with you that the lengths thing is stupid for reasons I've stated before. They should match up cars that are somewhat even or if that is too hard they should just use the staging lights and tree and bracket race (same thing as "lengts" but atleast both cars do a full 1/4mile not 3-10 "lengths" short). This week and last week were both reruns, I hope they have more shows for this season. I understand with it being a new show and they don't do that many for money reasons but we need to see more. As for the host, he is a little wound up, but he kind of has to be to get some of the idiots in line. I think there was only 2 or 3 shows where he could actually laugh and relax a little, I think he's alright. The show I like but hate the hosts is that Tuner Transformation. I hate the way they talk (Canadians). I hate the way they say about=aboat, or sorry=soarry, or Nissan=Nisaan. I also hate the fact that I have only seen 1 American car on that show and that was a Mustang, they need more American cars. I do like what you said about drum brakes for low performance cars-campers and Vettes. Don't forget, fiberglass is for boats!!

karll
10-08-2005, 12:30 AM
The host is all right yea, he just takes it too seriously sometimes. He can be a good guy though. I liked him during the races between the Straight Line Performance Camaro and some Trans Am. The Trans Am guy didn't know what he had agreed to and was getting all upset and the host was just like "shut the hell up and get in your car."

As for Tuner Transformation, I don't know what to tell you. The mustang is the only American car on there really because its the only big American tuner. When you hear tuner you usually think of some Japanese car so I think that is why its mainly imports and what not.

Well, it's official...my life is over. Pinks had it's 3rd rerun in a row this week. I guess there are no more new Pinks this season. I like that show, but I thought it was kinda cool to see a show on tv that DOESN'T just work on the big 3. I can't figure out why there isn't a SINGLE show on tv that, instead of the usual big 3, does imports. I know it would get watched...I know it wouldn't get like the mustangs and all that here, but still...Imports are quite popular these days. Plus, it'd be nice to do something to legetimize the Import world. I think it'd be great to see an Import big 3 (Nissan, Toyota and Honda) "Horsepower TV" and keep it rice free. No gay wings and decals and all that shit...BUILD ENGINES...show that Imports aren't JUST wings and decals and all that stupid shit and that Imports can be just as fast as __________(insert domestic of choice here). Don't you guys think that this is a big reason why the majority of people brush off imports as rice bullshit?...cuz all they see is rice bullshit...

But, I still like watching them build the engines on that show...even if they are stupid ass mustangs and all...lol...j/k.

I wish I had Speed TV...

karll
10-17-2005, 07:17 PM
Actually horsepower tv did a civic build the other day. Not sure what all they put on it. I think it was just n2o, but hey, it was an import. Yea, I used to be really biased towards American cars but I have learned my lesson. I agree with what you said about how built think "rice" is stupid because they see ricey cars. Hell even a mustang can be ricey.

longlivetheZ
10-17-2005, 07:41 PM
Yup.

What I was saying though was that I thought it was kinda cool that they did the Civic thing...I just wish they didn't do it so friggin half assed. What...they swapped in an engine, put on an intake, exhaust and nitrous? Wheee. Build an engine for it, do it right and race the mustangs and camaros they build with it and show that imports AREN'T something to brush off. I wish they would have done that (or at least more than they did), but they didn't. Instead, they put decals on it and put nitrous on it and called it a day. THIS is what made a ricer a ricer...shows and movies that portray Imports this way...stupid 4 bangers with an intake, fart can muffler and a wing at the most...such a joke. Kinda makes me mad.

It's all good, though...cuz, either way, I'll always have a Nissan...

karll
10-17-2005, 08:20 PM
ah, yea now that you mention it all they did was put on n2o. the car had previously had nitrous anyway so it was kind of shitty. i know what you mean. i love to watch them build up camaros and mustangs but it would be cool to see them build a hopped up engine for a honda or toyota or something. god knows i could learn a thing or two. maybe we should email spike tv and tell them to get their act together and make an (Import) HP TV. hmm, not a bad idea.

longlivetheZ
10-17-2005, 08:26 PM
Very cool dude. I was expecting a completely different reaction. Very cool...especially the "I could learn a thing or two" part. Very friggin cool, man. That's the main reason I watch the show that's on now...I've learned more about V8, pushrod, carbed engines than ever just watching that show...and that's what it's all about...shows...this forum...books...whatever...all about learning. Very cool, man.

karll
10-17-2005, 08:33 PM
haha, thanks man. yea thats my main problem. the only shows on the you can learn about imports/tuners are Nopi tunervision, street fury, or formula d. And those shows concentrate more on the "ricey" side or things (rims/body kits/carbon fiber/wings.) come to think of it, i think a channel could really benefit from having a import based show in their listings. maybe i will have to save up and buy a nissan now so i can learn something besides how to work on v8s. wow, this is like opening up a whole new world, i just had an epiphany.

Hey Z, you sound like a ricer who has his head on straight. WOW, did I just say that? I like the fact that you don't like the stupid coffee can mufflers, 6feet tall spoilers and all that stuff. I hate to say it but I have seen a few Jap. cars that actually are done tastefully. They have aftermarket spoilers (low profile) with a nice look to them, a not too big of a muffler or too loud (like a hornet) and some actually have nice wheels (not too much bling). I do have to admit, if I did ever buy a foreign car it would be a Toyota or Nissan, but NO Hondas. My uncle sells Toyotas and he said that Hondas have to have the valves or valveguides adjusted every 30,000 miles. Is that true? I didn't believe it. And what's up with Toyota not having a sportscar now? They stopped making the Celica in 04 and haven't had the Supra in atleast 4 or 5 years. I wouldn't think that now is the time for a Jap. car co. to get out of the sportscar seen. Does Toyota have something big up their sleeve for 06 or 07? Anyway, I do kind of agree with you Z about the foreign cars, some are done right but most of them look like a 12 year old put that stuff on. The other thing I don't like about them is that it takes alot more $$ to make them faster. Although, with FWD it would be nice to drive my baby in the winter. DON'T GET ME WRONG, THEY BETTER NEVER MAKE THE MUSTANG FWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

karll
10-17-2005, 11:01 PM
Z is not a "ricer." the term ricer seems to be deragatory(sp). the term ricer relays images of carbon fiber body kits and big mufflers or big spoilers. no, z is an import enthuisiast. just because he has an import or likes imports, doesn't make him a "ricer." remember that.

I'm just a car guy. I like my cars like I like my music: fast...heavy...metal.

(And here I begin this long post...)

I've loved cars my whole life, probably like you guys. But, probably unlike you guys (I say this in general), I grew up around mostly import cars. My dad's looking for his 4th Porsche, the first car I ever drove was one of his 944s, my Uncle has worked for Toyota for...like...10 years now and he ALWAYS brought bad ass imports around. Toyotas, Nissans, whatever...he always had, and still does, the coolest shit handed to him...and not just Toyotas (which I never really got). I call him the Car Pimp.

Simply put, there's 1 thing we're AAAAAAAAALL trying to do...make our cars fast. We just choose different methods in achieving this. One guy chooses a little 4 banger. I prefer a 6 cylinder. You guys obviously prefer a V8. These are ALL acceptable ways of making power, even though they all go about it in different ways. 4 banger dude will probably have to rev really high unless it's running forced induction. The V8 is big enough to go for low range power in NA form and be reasonably successful. I choose the 6 cylinder (3.0L in my case) because it's a great middle ground. It's small enough with few enough moving parts changing direction all the time to be able to rev high relatively easily (keep in mind...I say this GENERALLY SPEAKING...) as opposed to the bigger V8. But it's big enough to actually have SOME low range torque unlike most smaller 4 cylinder engines. It's kinda like a jack of all trades...master of none...to make it shine, add some forced induction (I prefer turbos over superchargers, but that's another arguement) and you have all the benefits of a smaller engine (fuel economy, reliability, etc) and all the benefits of the most gigandamous engine you can think of (at ~14psi, an engine essentially doubles in size...eg...a 3.0L engine running ~14psi is more or less equivalent to an NA 6.0L engine).

We're just different kinds of car guys....but still just car guys.

I've owned a 4 cylinder 86 Celica GT-S. It was fun...redlined at...like...7600 RPM or something like that. I just don't like FWD for sports purposes. I also had a 2001 Honda Prelude as a daily driver, which was a 2.2L 4 cylinder. That car was AWESOME. No matter what you guys would like to say or think about Honda (and no, you DON'T have to do any goofy special stuff to hondas...they're extremely reliable and efficient [sp.] cars), V-tec is AWESOME. It's like a turbo kicking in all at once at ~6000RPM...it's a blast. Unfortunately, I had to test one aspect of a car that no one wants to in that car...it's safety. That car was totalled thanksgiving night last year. I flipped it, almost landed in a creek, flew through about 10 trees...it was really bad...but I didn't have a scratch on me.

But, I'm currently looking for my 4th 300ZX...talking to someone about one now, actually. Why is THIS, the Z31 (84-89 300ZX), my car of choice? Lots of reasons: they're cheap as hell. They can be found in GREAT shape for less than 5 grand. And no, they're not expensive to modify (this applies to generally all imports these days...back in the day, this might have been more true...now, it's pretty much the same.). I can get a stock Z31 down to the mid 5s in the dash to 60 for a mere ~700 bucks...if that. That means I could find a Z31 in decent shape for ~3000, put less than a grand into it, and be running with you stock 00-04 mustang guys for LESS than 4 grand. Another reason I like them is they're rear wheel drive. As far as I'm concerned, a true sports car should be rear wheel drive with a manual trans. Can't heel and toe and RPM match an auto (the vast majority of them, at least...I know the Ferrari Enzo will RPM match your downshifts, for instance).

I know someone out there is thinking "you've owned a bit of most everything else out there, but have you owned a V8 yet?" No, I haven't. Why? I dunno. I'm just not a V8 person. They kinda seem too old fasioned to me. Even as far back as the 50s, the only way to get a car to go fast (for those days), you had to have a big engine...usually a V8/I8. I much prefer the "higher tech" smaller engine + a turbo approach. I'm not opposed to getting a V8...don't get me wrong. I'm not "anti V8"...it's just not a big priority on my list. I like learning about them, just like I like learning all I can about just about everything I can. Not dissing it...just don't think it's for me...not right now, at least. I'm not done figuring out turbos and how they apply to V6s yet. When It's time to move on, maybe I'll move to V8s and/or ways to make NA power...I dunno.

I'm not a ricer cuz I actually know cars. I'm building a VG30ET out of my last Z31 turbo (which I picked up for only 800 BUCKS!! and it ran GREAT). How many "ricers" do you know that ACTUALLY HAVE AN ENGINE IN THE PROCESS OF A REBUILD? I could give a shit what a car looks like, for the most part. I don't wanna drive an ugly peesashit, but looks aren't very important to me. Unlike all those damned people that make the term "ricer" what it is today, I refuse to put tons of useless non-functional shit on my car. I beg of you all...EVERYONE in the car world...PLEASE don't lump all the "import" people into the "ricer" group. Contrary to what people may think, most import guys ARE NOT ricers.

WOW, I THOUGHT I WROTE BOOKS ON HERE!! Well, first of all, I get what you mean about not being a ricer. But you know I was just using that as a general term. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE, DO WE HAVE TO BE P.C. ABOUT EVERYTHING NOW?!! Wow, I feel better now. I agree with you that whatever you drive you should always try to find a way to make it faster, however....I just think it's funny (I know these are the "ricers" that you are not) that some guy in a mid 90's Nissan Sentra with a big monster tach, coffee can muffler, satelite dish spoiler, etc...saw my license plate frame on my 97 Taurus DOHC that said " I'd rather be drag racing" and he wanted to race me at a light one night. Let's just say he got spanked!! Oh, by the way, I also had my 4 year old daughters Whinnie the Pooh sunshade in the window at the same time (if that doesn't say family car I don't know what does). Yeah I know there are some fast imports out ther that would eat up the Taurus and give a Mustang a good run or beat a Mustang, stock or modified. I guess it's the whole attitude that most people don't like (worse than Vette owners). A guy I know has an 04 or 05 VW Jetta GLI 1.8TURBO. He is what I would call an import guy also, although he's into German cars. I don't have a Mustang since I sold it last year but he wants to race me in my Taurus (3.0 Duratec DOHC 24V 200HP/200TQ). How can I make the Taurus faster besides K&N, exhaust (QUIET EXHAUST PLEASE). That's all I could find for the thing. Anyway Z, you're alright for a ricer...oh sorry, I mean import guy. P.S. Yea...I have a habit of writing RREEAALLYY long posts...sorry...but thanks for reading! lol

Well, first of all, I get what you mean about not being a ricer. But you know I was just using that as a general term.

I know...and this is what I want to change. This is what I mean when I say that there needs to be seperation between "ricers" and TRUE RICERS...know what I mean? I don't care, though. I've been called worse...lol.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE, DO WE HAVE TO BE P.C. ABOUT EVERYTHING NOW?!!

Fuck political correctness. I have a shirt that says "fuck subtlety"...that sums me up pretty well most of the time.

Wow, I feel better now. I agree with you that whatever you drive you should always try to find a way to make it faster

Within reason, of course...right?

however....I just think it's funny (I know these are the "ricers" that you are not) that some guy in a mid 90's Nissan Sentra with a big monster tach, coffee can muffler, satelite dish spoiler, etc...saw my license plate frame on my 97 Taurus DOHC that said " I'd rather be drag racing" and he wanted to race me at a light one night. Let's just say he got spanked!! Oh, by the way, I also had my 4 year old daughters Whinnie the Pooh sunshade in the window at the same time (if that doesn't say family car I don't know what does).

I know what you mean...kinda...do you mean you dislike people that would race you no matter what you're driving or what they're driving? I'm kinda this way. I don't drive a fast car by any stretch of the imagination (NA Z31s are NOT fast and are VERY difficult to MAKE fast), but I get a kick out of playing with people. I'll fuck with just about anyone...but only if they fuck with ME. For instance...there was a Super Coupe running with me up an on-ramp the other day that was actually a pretty nice car. I was on my way to work at 6:30 am-ish and I thought it was fun...good way to wake up. The guys that actually ARE stupid are the ones that go around picking "fights" with everyone (which is not cool), racing on crowded roads and in traffic (which is REALLY not cool) and just being kinda stupid when their car is NO WHERE NEAR fast to begin with (which just makes them look kinda stupid). But...just remember...IT'S ALL IN FUN!

Yeah I know there are some fast imports out ther that would eat up the Taurus and give a Mustang a good run or beat a Mustang, stock or modified.

Sure there are. EVERYONE that's into cars should ALWAYS REMEMBER that there will ALWAYS BE SOMEONE FASTER THAN YOU! PERIOD!

I guess it's the whole attitude that most people don't like (worse than Vette owners).

It's funny that you say Vette owners...even I have had experience with them. I always say that the 2 LEAST likely people to be cool and want to have a bit of fun with you would be either older women or people (in general....HA) in Vettes. Never got that. They actually DO drive FAST CARS...why the HELL would you NOT want to have fun with it? I never got that. And, to make this even FUNNIER: I once ran into an older woman, probably in her early 60s, that drove a Sledgehammer Vette (which was a COMPLETELY bad ass car, by the way), said she auto-crossed it (which blew me away that she even KNEW WHAT THIS WAS), AND she knew what the hp and tq numbers were for it as well as what other misc mods were done to it (slotted rotors, bigger calipers, suspention work, etc). I was in awe. This was by FAR the coolest woman I've EVER met over 50.

A guy I know has an 04 or 05 VW Jetta GLI 1.8TURBO. He is what I would call an import guy also, although he's into German cars.

Well...yea...German cars are imports, too...:p

...but he wants to race me in my Taurus (3.0 Duratec DOHC 24V 200HP/200TQ). How can I make the Taurus faster besides K&N, exhaust (QUIET EXHAUST PLEASE).

Well...even though I don't know anything about those specific cars, if you'd like to free up a bit o' extra power, a K&N and a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust system with a high flow muffler is always a safe bet. How noisy this would be, I dunno. After that, I'd check into an aftermarket ECU, an electric cooling fan if it comes with a mechanical fan from the factory (again, I dunno) and maybe some cams and head work. There's lots you can do to an engine with having to go as far as forced induction, even though a turbo will be your best power adder, hands down. I dunno haw fast you can actually make it without spending a ton of money, nor do I know how fast you could ACTUALLY make it at ALL, but there is always progress to be made...especially with a DOHC engine.

Anyway Z, you're alright for a ricer...oh sorry, I mean import guy.

lol...GET IT RIGHT...j/k

P.S. How bad would he beat me in a 1/4mile with the VW it is a 6spd. stick.

I have no idea. Who weighs more? Who's got stickier tires? What kind of engine does he have? Who's got the better running car? Who's modded? Who's not? What car does he have specifically? If he has a newer GLI (think '05-ish), good luck...I've driven one of those...actually tried to buy one...it was sufficiently powered for a car of it's size. It went reasonably well. Neither car is REALLY built for that. But, again, I know NOTHING about your car and, at best, very little about his...so...all in all...I dunno...try it and let me know.
