Engine swapping question

im eventually going to be replacing the engine in my car, now as to how soon that happens im not sure, but my car is a 96 2.2 L manual cavalier, now is it possible for me to put in a 2.4L engine into it, and what would be the advantages disadvantages of doing this?

the 2.4l engine that came in the cavs? if so then then it should be / most likely be a direct swap, you will have a lil bit more displacment and a lil bit more hp stock.
advantages, a lil bit more hp in stock form
disadvantages, well the engine costs quite abit for that lil bit of hp and .2 liters more.

wrong..the 2.4 is NOT a direct swap into a 2.2 stock cav...your going to need wiring harness' ,motor mounts ,ECU
your best bet is to buy a recked Z24 and rip the guts out and replace it exactly how you found it in the reck into your car....OR sell your car and buy a Z24 all together...those are the 2 cheapest ways

umm, i thought the 2.2L and the 2.4L was the same engine just bored + stroked a lil bit more, so really wouldnt need motor mounts.

2.4 is DOHC Dual Over Head Cam
sorry if i made a mistake of what the displacement meaning...thought thast what it was cuz someone told me that...i didnt say i was a god when it came to car knowledge...but i DO know enough that those 2 engines are pretty different from each other for them not to be a direct swap...i dont care if i got the meaning for 2.2 or 2.4 wrong..im still right when i say you would need motor mounts ECU and the wireing harness...i might be wrong but i think the exhuast pipe would have to be cut shorter aswell since the header is in the back of the motor instead of the front like the 2.2 is...and you would need motor mounts cuz the motor is pretty much flipped...TB in front headers in back on the 2.4 and headers in front TB in the back for the 2.2
and as for the .2L more...you want to run a turbo setup on a 2.2 to hit 300HP but if you took EXACTLY the same parts or money for that matter to get that 300hp turbo setup on a 2.2 you could hit 350 on a DOHC...the benefit of going 2.4DOHC is way more worth the money when it comes to upgrading it...they have more potential...if you wanna do up an engine to its max then go with the 2.4 rather then the 2.2 cuz its not worth dropping 5 grand into the 2.2 to end up with like 300 horse when you could have spent that 5 grand on the 2.4 and got 400+

but dont get me wrong...im not saying its not worth fixing up a 2.2..hell thats what im working on now...2.2 with a T25 turbo setup running 8 psi , but my point being..if you wanna do a swap..buy a write off with the engine and tranny untouched..and replace everything from the 2.2 with the 2,4

look for say 3000 bucks you get a nice turbo and a the forged internals, you put them in the 2.2, now if you spend that 3000 on the 2.4 liter swap, wdf are you gonna spend on making it hit 400hp? do you have millions of dollars to just pump into your ride? i know i dont.

i didnt say you had to be rich to do it...i said if you were to make a project of your car for the fastest car you can make out of a cavalier to go with the Z24 engine...and the guy that made the thread NEVER said anything about buying a damn turbo...so let up on the damn turbo subject...he wants to swap to a 2.4..im saying that its a better idea cuz after if he wants to upgrade AFTER, then the 2.4 will take to mods better

so for the hassle i might as well just keep with a 2.2 litre engine, and for the shape my car is in, its cheaper to buy a new engine for a grand than to get a new car is why im interested in this, because i can get the engine put in for free. and i agree with mod'd cav, i just asked if it would be worth while, but not for all the hassle, and definatly no turbo, im just looking for a new engine, i mainly want my car to look nice, doesnt need to go 200 km/h

rebuilding is something i dont know how to do or have time to do really, and neither does the mechanic i know, so ill debate whether or not to buy a wrecked z24 and use the engine or whether to stick with a 2.2, i already have 1 parts car, but its got alot of kms on it aswell, and its not a z24, so it might be a pain in the ass to have another car sitting around

wrong..the 2.4 is NOT a direct swap into a 2.2 stock cav...your going to need wiring harness' ,motor mounts ,ECU
your best bet is to buy a recked Z24 and rip the guts out and replace it exactly how you found it in the reck into your car....OR sell your car and buy a Z24 all together...those are the 2 cheapest ways
and the disadvantages of it costing more cuz its .2L more? ,,,that doesnt even make sense..it has nothing to do with how many more litres it is that makes it more expensive..the 2.2, 2.4, 3.1, 3.8, 5.0, 5.8 are discriptions as to how much of a fuel to air mixture for combustion the engine uses
