I have a 83 celica with a 22re engine. I started having a problem that occures in the afternoon time of day when the outside temp is in the 90's. After driving 5-20 miles the engine starts missing and dies. After about 45minutes the carwill start and run fine for another few miles the cut out and die again. The car runs fine in the early morning hours when the outside temp is ih the 60's and it will run 60 miles without problems.
At first I thought it was the fuel filter I replaced that which was a pain, then I thought the cloi might be getting hot and expanding so I replaced that too without any luck.
Would the catalitic converter cuase this problem if so could
i just punch the guts out of it. Any ideas?

thermostat, muffler, or cat converter, those are the three things that could cause it, thats what caused it on my honda atleast

o.k. I spent this afternoon removing cat and gutting it. I test drove the car and it still has the same problem. I might also add that the temp gauge remains in the normal range.

Sounds like time for a custom hood scoop for cold air... or take the hood off completely. Just try it and see if it runs ok. Then you'll at least be able to get around til you fix it. Good luck!

you might want to check the muffler, because it could still be clogged, the only way to check it really is rip it off and replace it

I removed the muffler a long time ago.
