This evening I went out to my car, and I noticed that my viper security system didn't beep at me when I unlocked the car. As I got closer, I noticed that the steering wheel was hanging off the column, by the air bag wires. Called the police, they came took a report. Nothing at all was missing, so I count myself lucky since I have over $1,000 worth of stereo equipment in my vehicle.
I really want to see if any of you guys know how to put the steering wheel back on. If I can do that, the car runs just fine. I put the ignition switch back in (if I didn't have my Viper start switch cut installed they might have my car now) and started the car, so that's ok. If you have any suggestions for how to put the wheel back on, I'd appreciate it. My haynes manual is about 200 miles away from me right now. Any references to an online guide would be helpful. I would post pics, but I don't have a digital camera. Thanks.

Awesome thank you for the link. I found out that they broke the shaft that goes from the steering wheel bolt to the first U-joint on the steering column... I have no idea how much it's going to be to fix it. The steering is officially f*cked. I can't drive it as it is.

U might want to get the viper security system checked, and if u installed it urself then it isn't working right. Because if the door opened the alarm would go off, if they broke a window the alarm would go off (if u hooked up the shock sensor), also there is a battery backup if they would cut the wires. So how did they break in, u didn't hook up the door triggers, its only 1 wire to do, or did u forget to arm the alarm

The viper system was fully functional, and active. The crooks used something to pry open the window at the top, and then used something slender to use the electric door locks to unlock the door (which you can still use to overide the viper, however if the system is armed it will sound the horn, flash lights, etc.) More than likely that is the only thing they did to sound the alarm. The shock sensor is probably not tuned to be sensitive enough to detect the prying of the window (not really a "shock" anyway) After they had the door open/unlocked all they had to do was pop the hood, rip the wires going to the horn, and then the alarm is going off, but it's not attracting attention with the sound.
That is the best to which I can reconstruct what happened. I have the obvious proof that the window was chipped slightly where they pried on it, and the weather seal that it hits above, was behind the window (it's supposed to be in front, so window was pulled in front of it). Then I have the fact that the hood was popped when I got to the car, and the wires from the horn were literally ripped out (sign of haste, not cut, trying to shut the horn up as fast as possible). After that, the steering wheel was disassembled and the ignition was hanging and the steering column was broken (the 3/4inch steel rod was sheared).

Then i would have to suggest a DEI (the owner of viper alarms, if u already didn't know) battery backup built into the siren, they sell one, u can also find one on ebay for cheaper, if they rip or cut the alarm wires, the alarm will still go on. They also did tests on it and it still works if u run it over or hit it with a hammer and such

The gun would have been completely useless to me in that situation. I would not have been able to shoot anyone. Never caught them in the act. Believe me, I wish to do many bad things to them. I wish I did catch them in the act. Whomever it was would have some serious injuries. And I would have someone to pay for the repairs.
And yes, I was extremely lucky they didn't get my car.
