Washer/wiper question

My wife has a '97 Civic LX. When you pull the right lever on the steering column, it squirts fluid, but the wipers do not automatically come on. So, to use it properly, you have to pull the lever towards you to squirt, and at the same time pull it down to engage the wipers. She got the car new, and said it has always been like this. Is this normal? NO other car I have ever had was like this, including the 3 hondas I owned (CRX, Accord, Prelude). How can I fix it?

I Can't Remember How It Was In My Prelude's But In My 96 Civic It Is The Same Way And I Don't Think There Is Anything You Could Do About. Although What I Do Is Turn The Wipers On High Then Pull Back.

i think it's just like that... that's how it is on our '84 accord too, it just doesn't sound like a big deal, so don't worry too much about it.

Well, how does it operate on your '98?

I think it's the same... pull it towards you, the fluid goes, and then push it down to move the wiper... but honestly i haven't used it much so i could be wrong
