Differential regearing

I have a question about regearing the Dana rear end on my 01 TJ so I can actually use my 5th gear when running on the highway. But I dont know what size pinion and carrier I need. I have a 4" lift sitting on 33" tires. Does anyone know what size I would need to change to?
Also, do I need to regear the front differential also?

You didn't say what engine you have so can't completely answer your question but yes you will need to regear the front diff too.

With a 4L, the 4.11 would be the lowest numerical gear and if you have the 4 cyl likely the 4.88 would be the one.

Do you know what the current ratio is??

Someone else might have other ideas. You could call this my WAG:icon16: without knowing the rest of the details.

It's a 4L engine, but I have no idea what the current ratio is. Whatever is stock, thats it.

Look on the diff cover. There should be a metal tag on one of the bolts that gives the ratio and possibly another that tells you to use the LSD additive if thats how it is equiped.

Some may have come with 4.11 from the factory but I think that the most common was the 3.73 and there is a 3.07 ratio too.

If you have a 3.73, with the 33's you are likely turning about 2200 at 65 mph in 5th. A 4.11 will put you at about 2400 and a 4.56 at 2700 rpm.

The 3.07 will put you at around 1800 in 5th. good for flat cruising but the hills would try my patience.

i have a 94 4cyl. with 7 in. lift and 33's and went to 4:88's and its great now but with the 4l. all u need is 4:10-4:11's thats what my dad has in his 01 with 35's(tires)and an auto but it also has all kinds of power and better fuel mileage to.
