Broken Blower Motor Resistor

I had the "normal" problem with my 2001 Grand Am AC/Heater not working on the lower speeds and then finally dying two weeks later I figured that I needed to replace the resistor. I performed all the necessary contortions to remove the resistor, when it "fell out" the top half of it was gone. I assumed it broke when it fell, however that is not the case.

The piece I have is not melted it has just broken. I am concerned that the other piece is "floating" somewhere that it should not be, I have looked for it, but to no avail. I have plugged in the new resistor to test it and the air is still not working. I have checked the fuses, not the problem, not yet checked the voltage or the relay, but I am wondering if the missing piece may be a problem. Any suggestions?

theres a fuse label'd HVAC check it. theres also a heater/blower relay under the hood.

Relay was OK replaced the motor even though it would run, fan would only turn once in a while (go figure). Never did find the missing resistor piece I am assuming it is "dust".
Did figure out it is much easier to replace the resistor when the motor is dropped. Took me about three hours to fix it all, but I think I did pretty well for a 40 something year old woman. :biggrin:

I find it strange such a new car needing a blower motor or the resistor toasting, but anythings possible. They sure dont give you mucha room to work on anything these days. Glad you got it fix though, you saved your self some money too. XI
