yeah i dont want the car for girls. i have always enjoyed american muscle cars and always wanted to collect them but for now ill stick with 1 or 2. I am just hoping i can win this auction and put the ls1 in the trans am. luckily its a pick up only auction so that should limit the number of bidders i have to beat out.

09-16-2005, 05:54 PM
so everyone agrees thats a deal?
Mr. Luos
09-16-2005, 06:01 PM
Disagreed.
Disassembled. Why??
Low miles?? How many is low?
No damage?? Then why is it apart??
The price is good, but the seller seems kinda odd. 350??? No one selling an LS1 would call it a 350.
Also, 1998 had the worst heads.

i think he bought it like that
low mileage he said in the 1000s
from the looks of his garage/storage area look like he is trying to make some money back. i am going to tryand go see it tomorrow with my best friend whose a mechanic to make sure its everything he says. can anyone check that casting number

I would most certainly go look at it before buying it. Get the casting numbers on the heads. Check ALL piston tops for valve contact. If EVERYTHING is there and in good shape, I say offer $1100 and don't take the heads. The 98 heads are worthless.
LS1 blocks alone go for 3K and more.
Nope. I can get a BRAND NEW LS1 block for $599.99. No internals, just the block.

dont u own a shop though lous? yeah i will go and hopefully check it out tomorrow, but the way it is lous you say no to the 1,300?
Mr. Luos

I wouldn't do it unless all the parts are VERY clean and no damage.
Those heads....be better to take them and sell them, save up a little money, and get something a bit better. Maybe some used LS6 heads or something. There is a lot of work involved to piece that back together. Machine shop will have to do a decent amount of it. I have seen complete motors go for around $1800. In the long run, that is about what you will be paying. If you are in a rush, this could work. If not, I say take a look at it, and check out other options as well.
No, I do not own a shop. That is TSP's price on the block for anyone.

i am in a rush but i rather wait longer if this turns out to good to be true

I don't see why its disassembled. If you had a perfect running ls1, why would you take it apart?

Make sure you stay true to that.
Be picky rather then be in a rush. It will pay off in the long run.

If he bought it dissasembled, that means he never has seen it run. I don't know, go with your mechanic friend and see how it looks.

just ask him about it. chances are he will tell you the truth (he has a good feedback rating). I'm thinking that he disassembled it himself. If it was for a hot rod project, he might have been planning on forged interals, cam swap, head work, crank swap, or any combination of those. it's always a good idea to start from the bottom up on high HP projects. Even if it ran fine, you can't put in a new crank without taking it apart.
Looks like a good deal, and probably is one. But of course with any used parts you want to check them out before you buy them. Just talk to him and ask him some questions, you should be able to vaguely determine if he is tellin you the truth.
I don't know the re-sell values for LSx engines, but I think I would be it for around $1100.

yeah if i can go today i will bid on it. if not i wont even consider bidding on it. like mr lous said its better to wait and be picky. It could be just a good thing in diguise just keep the 305 over the winter and have more money saved to do even more to the car. just curious what did everyone pay for their engines??

i think its prob a really good deal, he prob is selling it on the cheap side becasue it is dissassembled, and he might just want to get rid of it sooner, you figure if he wants a ton for it, it will prob take awhile to get ppl to acctually buy it... so go cheaper and more ppl will be intrested he might be taking a lil bit of a hit, but atleast he will have the cash that he can spend on whatever he needs... id atleast go and check it out, you said you dont live far from him, so atleast go check it out, and if you like it tell him you will buy it then run to the bank and make the withdrawl.

Do you really want to know???
Let's put it this way.....Fresh 402 shortblock with forged internals. No heads, no nothing except for the block and internals. $3800.
I am doing much more than that as well. Add heads, cam, exhaust, intake, timing chain, pulley, throttle body, clutch and related hydraulics, etc...

I know. People have asked me why I didn't just add boost. Well, you are limited on the stock motor with that.
This new motor.....not nearly as limited. And, this motor should make about 500 RWHP. Stock block LS1's with boost make about the same. But mine will be forged, and ready for more.
y2icon, remember that since that motor is apart, you will want to buy ALL new bearings, and all new bolts. This will be fairly expensive as well. Rod bolts, main bolts, etc....

i am pretty sure he is trying to clear the space viper cause he was selling another engine too.
i just think waiting would be the best thing since i will have plenty of time during winter since working for pespi will be slow then. i have a feeling too that people might get in a huge bidding war and then the guy would get getting way more then I offered. i did the same thing last time i wanted something off ebay asked the reserved offer to pay that day and come pick up and the guy ended up selling it for twice as much. the bright side of all this though is i will have more time to decide what to do with the camaro.
