I just changed the fuel pump on my 99 Grand Prix GT with the 3.8 NA. I removed the cover in the trunk area between the back seats disconnected the 3 lines and 2 plugs and took off the C-ring. I took out the old one and put in a new Airtex pump. I put in the new rubber O-ring around the pump and reinstalled the C-ring. I hooked up the lines and the plugs. NOW, I have a gas smell. It started after I filled up the car before a 60 mile trip. The smell in the car was unbearable I had to open all the windows. I took off the cover and no signs of any leaks. Since that fill up when I park it in the garage I can smell gas fumes outside the car. I ran it for awhile and watched the pump, no leaks, I got under the car, no leaks. I noticed right after I started it that around the pump I caught the smell but NO leaks. Is this normal or do I need to seal it up better somehow?
Thanks for all your help!

The air vents are coming from the engine bay. If you smell gas inside cabin, should you be checking the front? ie. fuel rail/injectors/fpr.

I agree with Langning you have a leak under the hood. I would check the fuel rail connections first but this may be a leaking FPR. When the diaphragm goes bad they will leak fuel. The new fuel pump is much stronger than the old one and it may have caused a leak that would not have been seen prior to the installation.
