SR20DET project from the US!!

ok, not to be all "jumping on the bandwagon" but I have been researching this, and was going to keep it a secret, untill I was done. I have collected all my information, refferance photos, and measurements, so now I begin.

the most important part (imo), and the most visible is the valve cover. this one isn't as nice as I'd like it to be, but it's a start. I'll use it on one of my projects, I'm sure, but not for casting purposes.

here are some crappy pics, enjoy!!

tips, comments, suggestions welcome.

oh, you want a nations battle eh?

i do admit, yours is much better than mine, i've done my top too, and it's not the best, i may have to re-do it, i think it's out of scale a bit.

yours looks really good, but dont forget the oil filler, like i did.

oh it's on there, but the plastic and crappy lighting kinda make it go away. what are you going to use for the lettering on the valve cover? I was thinking of having a vynil shop cut some out of thick vynil and just stick it on like a decal, then when I cast it, it will be part of the mold.

I really like this competition thing, I usually do my best work under pressure. and hopefully I will complete this project.

lettering, i was just going to use a decal of some kind, either print it myself or get somebody else to.

you've got the best reference material though, a real one!

i could use my car, but an MA2L looks nothing like an SR20.

EDIT: want a link to this in my thread in the Silvia section?, they are interested too.

hey thats looking rather nice, do you have an sr20 in your car? if not...any extra measurements or stuff like that you need just ask, i'll run out and take them off my sr, i also have access to an unistalled sr without alot of accessories on it if you'd like some pics of that as well. So far that vc looks spot on. For the lettering you could do some home photoetching and then have those cast on the vc, or add them separatly if you sell the castings...i'll buy a few sr's when you get them done...i've got several project cars needing them.

whenever I get around to it, I'll be building a turbo ka24e for my 240sx replica of my 1:1. I hope my valve cover looks as good as yours when I start.

HEY, THERE YOU ARE!!! hahaha yeah, I must thank John for hooking me up with the photos, and my buddy Ryan for letting me take some measurements from his valve cover.

thanks for the kind comments, folks! I am really stoked about this project, and will likely get it done fairly quickly, but please be patient, I am also trying to get my house ready for sale, gotta keep the wife happy...

hey grey, I appreciate your offer, and I may take you up on it. but currently I have all the images and measurements I think I need. besides, john and I are basically teamed up on thisone....he has the real one and I am making the model. as for my real car, I only have a measly little KA24DE in it at the moment, but I have been saving my allowences to go KA-T, and will be boost by end of next summer. go ahead and post a link in the silvia forum, I didn't even know there was one.

D_LaMz, "IF" I go into partnership with anyone, it will be after I get tired of doing it myself. unless there is a big chunk of incentive?!?!?! that does sound like a good option though.

that valve cover looks pretty much perfect. At this point you will need 3 different decals drawn up. "Nissan", "Intercooler Turbo" and "Twin Cam 16Valve".

Do you have the ability to cast resin copies of that?

Looks fantastic so far!
I'm very impressed and excited...that the secret is "out" :iceslolan
I think some die-cut transfer decals should provide enough "raised" textured to simulate the "Nissan" and "twincam 16 valve" castings.
A Datsun friend of mine made me some some stickers, for example:

675datsun, that is exactly what I was thinking about the vynil. I am going to have a friend cut several sets (incase I screw up, I'll have a few spares) from thick decal vynil, and it will be placed on a transparent film, so I can assure proper placement. thanks for that suggestion though!

blueboost, that is one reason I am doing this project...to help the rest of the nissan enthusiasts in our hobby have an engine in the cars we are so proud of.

after careful consideration, and thought, I have come to realize just how expensive this is going to be what with the price of casting materials, and fabricating needed. Nonetheless, I am going to push on, and get a quality part(s) to you guys, at an affordable price...which I have yet to come up with, it will be tollerable, I promise!! so keep your eyes on this one, I'm workin' hard on it!!!!

made a little "HEAD"way on this hahaha. I rebuilt the valve cover for the 3rd and (hopefully) final time last night, and am quite pleased with the results.

I started the head yesterday, and so far have finished the front of the head/timing cover. anyway, here are some pics, I'll shut up now.

thanks for the kind words! I have a good friend that happens to be here on A/F that sent me some super pics, and several friends from www.nismokc.com are being quite helpful by letting me see their stuff.

I plan on making a Greddy "football" intake and top mount turbo manifold, haven't decided if it will be tubular, or log style. probably tubular and make it look like the FULL RACE offering.

Dude that's bitchin'! Thanks so much for stepping up to the plate and taking on this project.

You'll hate me for this, but can you make an S14 valve cover too:

One of these days I'll build my 1:1, one of these days

Thought that was an S15?

Either way, if you're a decent fabricator you could easily modify his to make it look like that? Just build up the top of the VC with some strip styrene, then shave the rear of it down a bit. You'd lose the script, but I think it's in the wrong place for an S15 VC anyway...

I'd say tubular since it will be fairly easy for most to make a log manifold if need be... :)

Thats very impressive! An aftermarket SR would definitely have a sales base, I would reckon...

Its looking best in the later pics, in the earlier pics it looks much more like a Mazda BP (as seen in the MX5/miata/eunos roadster) than an SR.

09-21-2005, 02:43 PM
7th_skyline, I was kind of thinking the same thing, that's why I ended up making 3 different ones, and finally settling on the third...which it turns out, was the charm!! no progress today, sorry to say, I am quite buisy trying to sell this house, getting a bunch of remodeling and stuff done so I can get the most of my investiment.

on another more related topic, the house we plan to buy happens to have an airconditioned/heated shop with an office which will be perfect for modeling and 1:1 car building!! boy am I exited for this move. finally my own BUILDING to do my hobbies!!

well I ain't getting anything done by typing, thanks for the replies, I'll get more up when it happens.

well I haven't done ANY modeling for about 3 months or more now, unfortunately. with my father in law passing away, and this whole selling the house thing, plus work, holidays, and the ultimate excuse...I GOT A HARLEY...I have packed up my hobby stuff and stored it away with the exeption of a few kits and that SR. I am TRUELY sorry for not finnishing it as I promised, but honestly, that's the way things go. I don't mean to be rude about it.

I do still have the SR as my main project on my table, I have just found it very difficult to find the time to get out there and just do it. I feel as if I have let down my family or something.

rest assured, I do think of it on a daily basis, and do intend of finishing it as soon as I can.

again, sorry for the long waste of time I have been.

hey no worries bro. life has its ups and downs. i have a similar project (ultimate corolla) and i too just barely got back into the hobby. i think after the long break from making models regularly, i needed to get back to the basics. so i went out and picked up a simple model and built it OOB. no mods, no custom anything. it helped out and got me back into the modeling mood. it sounds like you have alot on your plate so don't worry too much about modeling. when you have time, you'll be back in full swing...catch my drift? LOL i do look forward to seeing more progress when you have a chance. good luck with this project!!

well aside from the center cover and the letters, the valve cover is done. but unfortunately that's where it all stops. I got the front of the head done, but I started on the sides and got side tracked.

I have made a LITTLE progress, I got one side of the head done, now I am working on the other.

I HPOE to have this thing done by mid march, to show it at the contest in dallas, texas. after that, and after I get into my new place I should be popping a few out for you guys, but the way things are around here, I'd be lucky to have the head done by then

no they got deleted from the host I had them on, and much to my dissapointment, I can't retrieve them from my computer either, so I'll just end up starting a new thread, or something once I get some more progress to show

well, I better get to it!!! hahaha, I just finished a paint project for a friend, now my table is all clean and ready to be covered with plastic filings and chunks that will eventually end up in the trash.
