Ok, I've been driving my car everyday on a pretty regular basis. I usually do a lot of highway driving, and the car does really good with it. Yesterday I did a whole lot of sitting still. I went to pick my girlfriend up from school on what should have been a 20 minute drive from my school, and it took about 45 minutes. I sit still for about 10 minutes waiting for road work (not really road work, they were cleaning out the ditches beside the road). Then I got behind every bitch on the road that did 40 mph in a 55. I drive like 70 through there all the time, but everybody I got behind yesterday did 40.
Anyway, yesterday my speedo started jumping around when I was going home. I set it to cruise on 70, but the needle jumps back and forth. It goes liquid smooth like it should when I'm speeding up unitl about 60, then it starts to jump. It jumps all the time when I'm slowing down. My check gages light is on all the time now too. Any idea on what's wrong? I hope I don't have to end up spending 200 dollars or more on this.

I talked to somebody who knows a lot about cars offhand and he said it could be a cable in the transmission. That sounds about right because the transmission took about a half second longer than usual yesterday and it made me chirp the wheel. So I guess I'll be going down to a mechanic to see what it is unless I can get some more answers on here.
The battery is doing pretty good, it sits at about 75% of the guage almost all the time, so it shouldn't be the battery.

your cars speedo isnt cable driven. Its electronic. Check to see what your SES light is on for and then go from there. Otherwise there may be something wrong with your speedo or transmission speed send unit or whatever its called that is in the transmission and send the signal to the speedo.

The Vss sensor. The speedo is not driven by the cable.
