2003 expedition transmission & transfer

Just purchased a 2003 EB and upon checking the transmission stick, found nothing on it. Added about a quart to bring it up to cold check, decided to just change the filter since I just got the car and had no record of previous transmission service. Upon draining the tranmission , I got only 3 1/2 qt out of it. Put about 5 qt back in to bring it up to cold check. While under I decided to change the transfer also. Got a surprise when I drained it, with about
1 1/2 qt overfull. I suspect the seal between the transfer and transmission is leaking since the transmission was low and the transfer was overfull. Anyone out there had this problem?
